I am brand new here, so take it easy on me. Just registered today.

I have removed the entire metal dash housing from my 69 Road Runner and I want to restore it. I have received conflicting information as to what to paint it.

My restoration guide tells me the thing is to be gloss black, with the exception of the panel above the glove box (that holds the Road Runner name plate and the standing bird decal), and the radio face plate. I am told that is to be flat black. I just got off the phone with Totally Auto and they told me that the whole damn thing is to be satin (flat).

Anyone have any other input? I sure would appreciate it.

Clay

Yes the whole dash is done originally in Suede black. Hard to get the real paint. Totally Auto has something that is close. Don't know what you are using as a guide that says it is gloss, but you need to toss it right away.

Check out Instrument Specialties website. Under the Products tab is some info regarding their suede paint. It isn't cheap, but it looks perfect. A pint will be more than enough to do your car.

Satin black has a shine about 1/2 way between gloss black & flat black.

The complete metal dash frame should be close to satin black, not gloss and not flat.

I used Dupli-color trim paint on my last dash frame and was very pleased with the results.

Look at some old unworn parts of your dash. You'll see it has a very light texture to it.

For a budget out of a spray can, Rustoleumn Textured black paint works really well at replicated original. You can get it at Wallmart and do a test piece.

I agree... use Rustoleum Textured Black part number 7220. As long as it's black in color, this is your best bet... and it's cheap too. Luckily, the last 4 cars I've restored all had black dashes. Here are some pictures from a '69 GTX I just finished over the summer.
