o.K. I purchased a 2003 Jeep Liberty...with a bad 3.7 engine to repair for my daughter. The problem I am having is that I have been told that I can only use another 3.7 out of a 2003 Liberty or a 2003 Dodge 1500 series 2wd truck.
Is this true....? anyone ever used a 2002 Jeep 3.7 engine in an 2003?
Please let me know...on here or send me a p.m.
Thank you!

There are 2 major differences on the 3.7 that will not let them interchange. The 1st and most important is the number of teeth on the crankshaft tone wheel and number of notches in the right cam sprocket. This is for the Cam and Crank sensors to read so the engine will fire and actuate the injectors. There are 2 different types. The earlier style uses a JTEC controller and the later uses a NGC controller. I am not sure which one you have but you must use the same kind that you have for the engine to run.
The other issue is wether or not your engine has EGR or not. You cannot use a non EGR engine in a vehicle equipped with EGR. However you can use a EGR equipped engine in a non-EGR equipped vehicle if If you block or plug the EGR plug on the rear of the left cylinder head. Other than that you may have to change the intake and or exhaust manifolds and possibly the oil pan/pick-up tube to complete the swap. No biggie. Hope this helps.

Is the Tone wheel interchangeable from crank to crank? Can you also switch cam sprockets?
How do I find out which controller I have?

I have a 02 liberty with the same issue. From what i have read 02 and 03 interchange. It looks like the tone wheel will interchange on later years but you have to remove the crank to do it.

Well, My thoughts are...that if I can't find a good used engine for the 2003 Jeep Liberty that I have, I was thinking....if my 2002 Liberty's engine will interchange...I will pull it and put it in the o3...and buy a new long block for my 2002 since it is my personal vehicle. I just want to make sure that it will interchange with out a problem.

You are so right as you reminded me of the Intrepid we had in our dealer with a junk yard eng that we finally found out was the wrong year and the tone wheels are different on some years as you stated. This one would actually run with the cam sensor unhooked so the tech replaced the cam sensor and after that the service manager and I got involved in it after the tech gave up. With everything hooked up it would not start. It was a good bit back as I cant remember if we tried to change the tone wheels or the guy took it back to where the eng was put in. Ron

Went through the same thing on a intrepid. Fortunatly on tht intrepid the tone wheel is the converter flex plate so it unbolts without having to remove the crank.
