Last winter I scribed new degree marks on my balancer due to the old ones were sand blasted off mud racing, In doing this I was off 5 @ 35, was 30 not 35,... So I have been running @ 28 all season not 33, All in all the engine ran strong but could not ET as good as last year down .15 average, Are there any consequences from running 5 retarded? Engine is a 4 inch stroke small block 12 to 1 on 100 octane leaded fuel @ 6800 rpm

The consequence, as you already know, is loss of power Also they(most motors on gasoline) tend to run hotter when the timing is retarded

Mr.Cab Racing and winning with Mopars since 1964. (Old F--t, Huh)

Would the extra heat show up in the exhaust temp?

Yes ... part of the fuel is burnt in the exhaust

My tubes look dark about 15" from the head, I thought it was cheep coating, I put a new balancer on today and turned the timing back up to 33, seemed to like 33 on 100LL in the past, I am looking forward to next week to butt dyno the change, I hope I didn't cook any exhaust valves We an 9 outings messed up, Seem to have lost 300 rpm off the top this year also, I wonder if the 5 degrees will pick it back up?
