I am installing a a833 trans with a 68 440 into a 74 cuda.I cleaned up the crank and the hole where the pilot bushing goes. There is no pilot bushing in the engine though its set up to recieve the bushing. The engine is already installed in the car.I saw a post that said to put the bushing in the freezer for an hour before the install and to use a very small amount of grease.I dont have any speacial tools to install the bushing. What can I use,or do I need a speacial tool to install? And what is the best way to do it?? I've added a picture of the crank and such.I thought it might have the bushing already but I saw a picture that someone else had on the site. After looking at it seems as the bushing goes in the front up to where the beveled edge starts.Which would make sense because if you stick the install tool in its very loose, and if the bushing was in the front it would be tight. Can anyone shed some light on all this?? Thanks

Go to your local Dodge dealer and buy one of the later model roller bearing from the 1986 and later Dodge 318 and 360 truck motors They fit into the wide part of the crankshaft where the converter hub fits on the automatic cars, way better way to align the input shaft

Completely agree with the post above!!!! Don't waste your time on the bushing, go buy the bearing - you won't regret it. Super easy to install, no special tools are needed either.

Just to answer o/p question, find a socket or something that matches o/d of bushing and tap it in. Go easy and keep it straight. Make certain crank recess is clean. I only use wd-40 to lube install. Make sure to grease tip of input shaft and bushing when installing trans.

Yep, but for my money, I still prefer the bushing. The oilite material might wear, but it won't pile up and damage the input shaft the way the bearings can do. For installation the socket method works well. I have also used a clutch alignment tool (with exchangeable tips) and sandwiched a thick washer between the tip and the main shaft to make surface to press against the bushing.
