I think this illustrates what you are saying.
Yes, that picture pretty much illustrates classic fatigue failure to the point you could put it in a textbook. I had a crankshaft in a Land Rover diesel parts engine that looked just like that. It is remarkable how little metal is needed for the one time load.

Good luck!!! My old boss had the same thing happen on a roundy round motor with one of there valves. He phoned them and explained that it was brand new. It made 1 hot lap and then carnage!!! Manley apologized and sent him a brand new valve!
