Looking at the stem you can see very clear indications of crack propagation followed by ductile failure. There may have been a surface defect on the one side that caused it to crack, maybe from machining, etc..

I think this illustrates what you are saying.

Yes, that picture pretty much illustrates classic fatigue failure to the point you could put it in a textbook. I had a crankshaft in a Land Rover diesel parts engine that looked just like that. It is remarkable how little metal is needed for the one time load.

I don't remember what series valve it was off the top of my head, it wasn't top tier but it wasn't bottom shelf either.

Kinda curious about the valve series, as in was it a 1 or 2 piece valve. Many people don't know that there are A LOT of valves made by starting with a seperate stem and head and spinning them in different directions to friction weld the heads on.

That's a lot of scrap iron. Looks like a new power plant is in the works.

Wow sorry to see that. It seems like the only good thing to come out of a blown eng is you will most likely build the next one even stronger. Ron

Finally pulled it all apart. All the bearings look great it didn't run long enough as it self destructed to hurt anything.

Will mag the crank and see about putting it back together.

I think I would contact Manley on that for them to do a failure analysis on that valve

Good luck!!! My old boss had the same thing happen on a roundy round motor with one of there valves. He phoned them and explained that it was brand new. It made 1 hot lap and then carnage!!! Manley apologized and sent him a brand new valve!

Im not wild about manley valves ...was very lucky when one broke in my hemi just as I was shutting it off to pull the motor ,,,literally caused no damage ...pulled apart and replaced all the valves ,the old Manley severe duty valves were laying on my bench and i was working on my car then i heard something hit the floor it sounded like a glass breaking ,went to investigate and it was another Manley severe duty valve had rolled off the bench and had shattered ......I still have both of them put away for the doubters ...these valves have a step in them down by the head and both of them broke there ...I was just real lucky ...
