Been working on a 1973 360/904 in a street rod. I've got a vibration. Pulled the inspection cover on transmission today and.... no weights. Can't seem to find a 904 torque converter for the 360 at a reasonable price. Anyone got a source? Or, should I go the B&M flex plate route?

Got to thinking, is the damper wrong too? I can't tell. Found this damper on ebay. Do you need to remove the pulleys to see the grove? Is this the right damper?

edit: Sorry, won't let me attach the picture from ebay

It looks like a LA 360 damper yes.

huh. I have at least 9 360 motors in the back of my shop, and I know they ran at least 2 different dampers. that is one style. what year is you engine? original crankshaft? pull the water pump belt off first, and make sure it's not an out of balance cooling fan.

Even if the machine shop internally balanced this 360 it would have either no weights on the front flat face of the converter (either chiseled off or a neutral converter) plus a neutral harmonic dampener & since your dampener is a 360 externally balanced unit I'd say they neglected to deal with the converter balance situation on the other end. I'd add the B&M flexplate & very likely you'll be good

Motor is 1973. Electric fan, so that's not it.

I went and looked closer at my damper. It's not like the one in the pic. It has two levels. Toward the engine is the round damper with the timing mark. It has two holes drilled in the edge on one side. On the outside, toward the front of car there's a second level which is not even. Bigger on one end, narrow on the other. Hard to describe. Is this the other style of damper?

I think it is the early 360 damper,360 first came out around that time IIRC.

I stopped at a local transmission shop today looking for a 904/360 torque converter. The owner told me he needed to know if it was a steel or cast iron crank. He said the balance made a difference depending on which crank. First I ever heard of this. Is it true? If it is, why would the crank composition make a difference in the balance weight?

I am thinking I am going to replace the TC rather than the B&M flex plate. This car was in storage for over 10 years and I think the TC may be on it's last leg anyway. scratchnfotraction found a TC in his area for me.

I think I found one locally, I know this afternoon.

360 has a cast crank , most Chrysler cast crank engines are external balance this is why the shop asked.

Just an FYI , there wasn't a forged crank 360 from the factory .
