I have seen two type of valve covers on 1971 big blocks. First is the 1970 style with just the PCV on the left valve cover, and then another type that have a raised up circular shape on the forward part of the left valve cover. Was this just a running change?
I have a March built car with the type with the circular bulge and as far as I can tell it is original.

Yes, it was a running change. (I would expect to see the LH "hump" & the same big "hump" under the oil fill on a 3/71 car)

Different big-block engines (L,N,T,U,V), different transmissions, different plants would've all transitioned at different times/dates & there would be overlap because there was little, if any, inventory control.

that's what I was thinking too.
I've seen both types on 71's

I also have the drivers side hump with an indented circle. It looks to be a place they wanted to punch out, but never did. Pics tomorrow.

I sold this pair of 71's with the "dimple" on the drivers side cover, on eBay last week.
Haven't a clue when the production started in 71 with these covers.

Interesting topic.

I just checked mine and i have the "bumps" on the left side, but only on the breather on the right.

Is this an example of an early build for 71 or is the RH side an older cover?
