Is it OK to mill the intake side of a set of 308 small block heads 0.04"???

I dont want to mill the intake since it is brand new and might use it on a later date on an engine with brand new heads, or might swap to aluminum heads...

....Id rather mill the heads now.

Domingo may be mistyping, but he typed 40 thousandths, not 4 thousandths. I don't think you want to shave off 0.04"

40 thousandths = 1mm which is completely normal to take off, don't even think about it.
Worst thing that happens as you mill the intake face of the cylinder head is the valve cover rail starts to get too thin. I don't think you'd go there.

As far as milling the intake, you are right, don't do it unless it's a last resort.
