The necked down area increases the velocity of the air right before the air needs to make a turn into the runners. That doesn't seem like it would be a good thing.

If it was a good thing then Dominator intakes would be designed that way and they aren't.

Pretty hard to put a dom on a 4150 manifold without
necking it down.... unless you want to cut it open
to dom mounting points

You`d think but then check out some of the big block chevy manifolds..........they are actually molded that way so who knows and your tests actually showed little difference in your book IIRC............ What I think gives the adapter a better chance is w/a spacer on top of the adapter to lessen the big ridge the carb see when fully open instantly hittig the adapter wall. At least it worked for me plus mine is fully ported and tapered all the way into the runners in the manifold.

A dom intake or dom conversion immediately makes intake runner length shorter, the neck down approach might be better for alot of combos because of increase runner length. a squirt of fuel slams right into the intake floor were as adding height gives it more room to atomize and find its way to a runner. as critical as many people are about header tube length and size, IMO, intake runner length should be equally or more important

It is equally important but much more difficult to change!

So which is better fast or slow moving air?

Using a restriction to increase the air speed is a bad idea. Speeding the air flow up before making a turn is another bad idea.

And you think increasing the plenum size this way doesnt slow everything down?

I use indys adapter on my w-5s w/indy intake. Seems to work ok & fits nice. On my new motor w/ indy SB heads & indy intake no adapter as the intake will be modified for 4500.I will most likley use a spacer though.

I doubt it... we all know its still taking in the
same amount of air but being that its (carb) is raised
up it have velocity entering into the narrowed area...
I'm sure its up some (but how much I dont know) but
is it enough to hurt before its curving to enter the
runner or is it plowing into the bottom of the plenum...
again thats a unknown for me... like I said earlier
that I picked up MPH and ET... but thats me... I havent
heard of many guys that havent picked up going with
a bigger carb or spacer weather it was a tappered
spacer with a dom or a straight spacer with the same
size carb which in the last case is just plenum volume

A properly setup tunnel ram with 2 4 bbls. should make more torque and hp from bottom to top. Why did you want to slow down? Dave

I hope to test this coming weekend. The change was from an Edelbrock Victor with a 4150 base and a 2" adapter to an M-1 with a 4500 base. Last fall it ran 6.56 in the fall. We will see what the change does.
