The necked down area increases the velocity of the air right before the air needs to make a turn into the runners. That doesn't seem like it would be a good thing.
If it was a good thing then Dominator intakes would be designed that way and they aren't.
Pretty hard to put a dom on a 4150 manifold without necking it down.... unless you want to cut it open to dom mounting points

A dom intake or dom conversion immediately makes intake runner length shorter, the neck down approach might be better for alot of combos because of increase runner length. a squirt of fuel slams right into the intake floor were as adding height gives it more room to atomize and find its way to a runner. as critical as many people are about header tube length and size, IMO, intake runner length should be equally or more important

So which is better fast or slow moving air?

Using a restriction to increase the air speed is a bad idea. Speeding the air flow up before making a turn is another bad idea.
And you think increasing the plenum size this way doesnt slow everything down?

I doubt it... we all know its still taking in the same amount of air but being that its (carb) is raised up it have velocity entering into the narrowed area... I'm sure its up some (but how much I dont know) but is it enough to hurt before its curving to enter the runner or is it plowing into the bottom of the plenum... again thats a unknown for me... like I said earlier that I picked up MPH and ET... but thats me... I havent heard of many guys that havent picked up going with a bigger carb or spacer weather it was a tappered spacer with a dom or a straight spacer with the same size carb which in the last case is just plenum volume

A properly setup tunnel ram with 2 4 bbls. should make more torque and hp from bottom to top. Why did you want to slow down? Dave
Well I know the TR would have been this best but I got in a money Pinch and it had to go. The domi is gonna kick butt!
