1) Where is hydraulic roller retrofit camshaft. I'm installed a thrust plate and thrust washer to control both directions of the camshaft play. I did not get a chance to check end play before installing timing chain cover. Moreover i have no idea how to do this even without chain cover installed. Anyways i wanted to explore a couple options to measure camshaft walk with the timing cover installed. The two ideas I had was to put the engine against a wall and measure the flexure of the timing cover by pushing against it with a dial gauge indicator. I believe another option might be a L shapped wire fixed to a dial gauge indicator where the L rests in the valley between two lobes. Anyways, wanted to know of any thoughts on the process.

2) Since I am using the stock stamped timing cover which is too flimsy in my opinion, I was thinking of building up some plumbers putty behind the water pump to serve as a means to resist flexure in the cover and take up any additional slop I did not account for earlier.

install the cam plug last put your dial indicator back there and move the cam by prying one of the lobes back and forth with a soft prying tool
i like .005 to .010 with a diamond racing roller button
cover flex is a problem i like the indy cast cover
use .250 pump hsg spacers and space out the crank pulley

You just need to buy a good timing chain cover. I've been making billet covers for years now that solve all of those problems. And they fit under a stock water pump so you don't need spacers. The cover comes with a setup plate that lets you check the end play. You can get the covers from Hughes or Mancini or a bunch of other places.

Overpriced and doesn't fit under the stock pump! Muscle Motors sells a VERY nice cast cover for $110. that fits under the stock pump. Thick enough to drill a hole for a pipeplug to check endplay.

I assemble the short block, including the rear cam plug and timing cover and measure off of one of the cam lobes with a dail indicator intended to measure movements in .0001 off of a flat surface

Many people have, I have to run a stock cover so that is how I plan to do it , weld a spacer to the back of the waterpump housing .

I was going to do that, but I wanted to run my engine on a dyno, and they use their own water pump set up. That meant I would loose the correct end play. So, I bought a billet cover.
