The real issue in an "A" Body is that I have found (with Stage V heads) the you have to channel / box the Frame rails.
There is no way you could modify the headers as you are fresh out of room. That was the task I was hoping to avoid.

I have noticed on other "A" bodys that the same thing has been done - sometimes the frame rail has been formed into a triangle cross section for more clearance.....

"No room" is an understatement. I have Stage V millenium heads, which come only in a raised port design. The headers are stepped from 2 1/4 to 2 1/2. I've had them on the car for 6yrs, and its still a battle every spring putting them on. It takes 2 guys and you better remember the proper sequence or your in for a long day. BTW the frame rails are not channeled.

Unless they reintroduce them or you find a set in stock somewhere heddman no longer makes the a- body header. In 09 I was the local track champ and won a contingency coupon from them so I ordered a set using the # from the older catalogs as the new catalog didn't list them. I ended up getting a b- body set ( the # was correct) which was a bit different. Mine are mp heads ( reg height) in a street car and I had to work the h out of them to get them to fit and the headers were a a-body set I picked up used in the early 2000s. With my car I had to massage about every part I used. Lol

Outlaw, very interesting.

What make of Headers and are they still in production?

Is the Engine in the "Correct" (as per TTI instruction) position - also, did you find you had to move it back too?

Some "underskirt" pictures would be really great, thanks!!!!

Fliptop, the headers were custom built. As far as the motor location, I'm using a stock crossmember and trans mount, so front to back its probably correct. I never measured the height, but I think it sits higher than normal if I had to guess.
LMAO, if I were to show you "underskirt" photos you would never put a hemi in an A body. With That being said, if you had a smaller cubic inch motor where you could use a 2 1/8 or 2 1/4 header it would be much better. That's why I have to laugh when somebody starts a rant about putting a diaper on one of these things. Its never going to happen. GOOD LUCK!

Great quote about the Diaper!!!

I am also (stupidly) building an AWB dragster with a 508 KB with Stage V heads. It sits soooooo looooooooooow in the frame (to clear Oil pump and Ultrabell) that I cannot get a diaper on it either!!!

The other Hemi with the Stage V heads will shortly be a 572 - changing to a mega block.

I was hoping to put that in the '67 Barracuda but the discussions here are definately putting me off that idea!!!!

I seem to recall that when I build the '69 fastback it had stock Hemi heads (Edelbrock cast in fact) but with the Super Competition headers, and that STILL needed the frame rails to be cut and boxed. It must be the design of the Hookers that causes the grief.

Very useful sharing ideas, though, and I thank everyone for their input.

Fliptop, when I first started racing this car it had a set of Hooker headers on it. What a joke that was. They were beat to death with a ballpein for clearancing. They looked like they had been run over in a bone yard 50 times. Before I bought this car, a friend of mine up in Minnesota who built Randy Hopkins class legal SS/AH original LO car warned me that when you put a hemi in an a-body, an 1/8 of an inch is a mile. Truer words have never been said. I've never had to cut anything on the car and the front end is all stock, but it sure is tight in there.

Interesting.

I am surprised you did not have to work on the Pass side Shock Tower.

I had to cut and box that on the '69 that had inner fenders, and also massively cut the back-halved '67 that had no inner fenders and bars from the roll cage to the chassis rails.

On that car we even had to move the steering Box - NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER again!!!

True dat! I've told people the exact same thing about shoe horning a Hemi into an A-body!!
