What is the max lift you can run with stock heads without machining the guides? What is the correct procedure for checking this?

It depends on which heads, what year, which original application and so on The way I check heads for max lift before machining the valve guides and cutting them for valve seals is to remove the valve spring , reinstall the keeper and retainer with the seals I'm going to run on that motor and measure between the top of the valve seal(with the valve held closed) and the bottom of the retainer. I shoot for .060 to .100 clearances depending on the intended valve spring pressures and RPM

do you know if those heads came on a magnum motor or a non HP motor? They had both version in 1968, the magnums had a single spring with a dampener inside and the non magnum had taller springs with no dampener, they will coil bind under .500 lift The magnum valve springs on magnum heads will probally take .550 lift at the retainer safely, but you always wnat to check them to make sure. Safe is having .080 or more clearance from coil bind on the springs and .060 or more between the retainers and guides, or valve seals. If your using parts that have not been ran together before you really want to check these clearances

They are from a non-HP engine but the springs and retainers will be aftermarket. I'm just worried about clearance between the guide/valve steam seal and the retainer. I'm looking at about .500 lift. I haven't bought a cam yet, I'm trying to figure everything out before I buy one and find out it wont work.

The old DC 509s never causes any issues did they?

I ran a voodoo cam with .533 lift with stock heads with different springs worked good. I changed to a .550 lift voodoo cam and used the same springs and wouldnt rev over about 5800 so im assuming I had some issues there.

Never,EVER trust anything on race parts, ALWAYS check the clearances, especially when in doubt

start checking retainer/seal/guide above .480 lift on stock heads. an hydraulic cam will want a little more clearance than a solid to be on the safe side.

I plan to check it, what I'm asking is SHOULD it be safe with something like the 509, just over .500 lift?

You know, before I buy the cam, check, find out it wont work, and have to get another cam.

Dude, get the cam you want and then have the heads machined to nake them work properly Don't end up wishing later that you had got that bigger cam to start with, life can be to short to compremised(SP?) on the little stuff, let alone the big stuff
