I have a pair of 11 x 2 1/2" brake drums that I want to turn. Most drums I have seen have a max oversize number stamped on the drums. These do not have that. What would be a safe size I could turn these to? One mics out at 11.067 and the other one is 11.078. Drums and rotors today seem to be one use items that cannot be turned.
Thanks
Arno

It was off an internet search from a part reseller... Allowing a .090 oversize leads to brake shoes that are practically worn out before the lining makes full contact with the drum... The equipment to arc shoes doesn't get used anymore do to health concerns so if you throw standard shoes on a O/S drum only the center of the shoe makes contact..... Even at .060 O/S it's a long time before the rear brakes are effective...

That makes perfect sense. I was thinking it had more to do with the strenght of the drum. I am old enough to remember arcing the shoes, in fact I have a friend that owned an old style auto parts store that had the equipment to do that. I'll have to give him a call and see if he still has it. As I recall it basicly sanded the shoes into the correct arc. I think if I have the drums turned to say 11.090 I could arc the shoes pretty darn close on my belt sander. I would have to take off approx. .045 at the highest point feathering out tho the ends of the shoes. .045 is less than 1/16". Not sure of the thickness of new shoes but I'm thinking 3/16 to 1/4". The old shoes on the car now mic at .225. If they were .250 and I took .045 of the centers, leaving over .200, I don't think there would be a problem.
Thoughts?
Here's the pic of the 11 drum that was sent to me with the max oversize being .090.
