What is your goal? I run the Purple shaft 268/272 .450/455 cam in my 340 under a 6 pac in my 81 shorty. I have power brakes. This cam has a sweet lope at idle, good power and the fuel mileage is great. If your after a street can I wouldnt go bigger than the 280/474.
I am truckless..

the 284-484 wont make enough vacuum for power brakes. Its 248* @.050" and ground on a tight 108 lsa.
284/484 is 241* at .050 292/508 is 248* at .050
Is that advertised or measured ? I think someone here measure a 484 and a 509 and came up with 248* and 254* respectively.

Thanks everyone.... I'm not sure what these other numbers mean, but it sounds like this engine would need a different cam to be used with my power brakes.
I did not buy it yet, but if I do, I guess I need a cam with less than 450 lift. Right?
I know very little about this stuff other than I want a stockish 340 in my Cuda and I want to retain my power brakes.

Smaller duration is what you are after for more vac. The lift isnt the problem.

There are (2) 284-484 cams..
The older version #P4120231 has significantly more overlap (68) and delivers less vacuum..
The later version #P5007696 has an overlap of 56 and delivers higher vacuum along with better driveability..
Don't use the #P4120231 if you have power brakes..
Just my $0.02..

Agree... much over 230 to 235@ .050 in a 340, especially with tight LSA, isn't going to make enough vacuum for PB.
One member mentioned a lower duration purple shaft that would likley work, there are other options. What are your goals?

I've got a 284-484 purple shaft in my 360, probably the older version since I built the motor in 1995 (but I'm not sure since I don't know when the newer version came out). My power brakes work fine, but I've got a vacuum reservoir. Without the reservoir, I don't think they would work well at all.

I've got the MP484 cam (108LSA version) in a 340 stroker (417ci) and I get about 14" of vacuum. I have power brakes and no issues.
the 4" stroke makes a huge difference.
