Jim (DemonDuster) asked me to test his engine he has on here for sale. He was asked what kind of power it put out.
The build is a Hughes Engines 426 shortblock based on a 360 L.A. block.(4.03 boreX 4.180 stroke)
Hughes also installed one of their hydraulic street grinds,HEH 3237AL.
Jim installed a set of OOTB Edelbrock RPM heads with Hughes 1.5 rockers and deep port matched Victor intake.
I used one of my shop carbs,an HP 950 that is set up just rich enough to be safe for testing. I also used a set of my headers,Hooker Super Comp 1 3/4 X 3".
I honestly estimated 530 lbs-ft and 450 hp with some tuning.
It idles with 14-15"of vacuum and sounds really tame.
I set the timing for the first pull to 32 degrees total and hit right at 450hp on the first pull and just a tick over 500 lbs-ft.

We bumped the timing up to 34 degrees and it liked it,I should mention it is a pump gas friendly 9.75 to 1 engine. We ran it on 93 octane pump gas.

We played around with a couple things after that, but did not see too much of a difference. I think he is posting a couple sheets on his for sale ad that might show more.
All in all,for such a mild camshaft and box stock heads I thought it did really well.
If someone wants a rock solid street engine with room for some major gains,I don't think you could go wrong. If a guy wanted to up the output, you could put a little more aggressive camshaft in it(I would go with a solid flat tappet).

The air temps were horrible today (99 degrees).
Here is an uncorrected graph showing what crappy air does, and showing what the tq curve looks like.

Good info! Thanks for the post. Good power with that cam and heads - and 15"hg to boot for friendly street operation.

That is a lot of torque down low for a victor intake.I was going to suggest an rpm intake for that small of a cam but the victor seems to work really well.
Head work and more cam = killer numbers.

Eerily similar to my 426 Ford small block Cobra replica powerband, similar cam, bore/stroke and victor intake. I've got a bit more head flow and header ( about 40-50 more hp up toP) but the 100hp gains per 1000 rpm with a flat torque curve makes for a fun street car with awesome drivability.

I would have picked an rpm air gap and mentioned that to Jim. He said Hughes suggested the Victor. If I would not have sold my air gap a few years ago I would have talked him into trying it.
