Yes, they were made. Volare wagons are common donors. It'll fit any A body, m,j, or F body.

They have some down sides too. "third" gear is where fourth gear used to be on the nonOD versions, so Mopar flipped the shift lever to correct the shift pattern. "Fourth" gear is where third used to be so the counter shaft is spinning whn in OD. Since Chrysler floated the countershaft and didn;t bush the aluminum case this tends to cause wear in the case.

Something to look for.

They say there are no such thing as a stupid question.
They say there is always the exception that proves the rule.
Don't be the exception.

they came in vans and trucks also. these units are long tailshaft versions. to use one you need to have the bellhousing to match. the input bearing is larger than the normal 8ss. nat a strong trans for racing but a cheap way to get overdrive in a street car. worth bout 100/150.00....

I am truckless..

Yep! I have a long tail shaft one from an 80 D100 pick-up in my 68 Barracuda.

I had one in my original 77 Road Runner. Damn thing used to stick between gears for no reason. Never did figure out why.

They sell used for about $100. They have a 5.125 bearing retainer diameter but you can use a large-bearing 4.80 bearing retainer if you have that size hole in your bellhousing. Passon has these, among others.

The first gear ratio is 3.09 which is really too low if you're going to use the tranny in a traditional OD setup, with 3.91s or 4.11s in th3e diff. Then there is a big jump between second and third gears, IIRC.

The whole idea was a kludge, but ford motors did it as well. There are also A-833-OD transmissions that were used in chevy pickups and have a slightly different front end. I think they were behind 6.2 Diesels in half-tons.

Once the floating countershaft is taken care of, the OD box is no longer the weakest A833.

And what must be done to "take care" of it?

Yeah, it's hopped up to over 160...

But that only takes care of one end of the shaft. Isn't the other end of the shaft still floating?

You bush both ends or just put the OD guts in a early iron case. Problem solved.

I was thinking more along the lines of putting 4 speed guts in an aluminum od case. Would you need to make the bushings and the shaft an interference fit, like the regular iron 4 speeds are?

Yes.

Doesn't need to me much intereference, you are just trying to eliminate the clearance.

Did I say how many bushings needed to be installed in that reply ???

The other end has to float to a degree or you couldn't put it together or take it apart easily . But it's not really floating , its a SLIP fit instead of a LIGHT PRESS FIT . but you can put a steel bushing at the other end also but hone it so the shat slides thru .

YMMV
