everyone, i have a 413 adn 727 cable shift trans combo. the 413 quit oiling the upper end recenty. i have a running cast crank 440 i can install quickly. are the input shafts different or are there any other things different enough to prevent me from using the 63 cable shift trans behind the cast crank 440? I know i will need an externally balanced converter. I want to get it running before power tour on June 6th (my neck of the woods). It's in a 71 short wide sweptline. thanks, JP in the land of Oz.

In '67 the torque converters changed. The older ones have a smaller crank hub and a 19 spline output.

You may have to use the 413 crank in the 440, or perhaps change the input shaft of the trans to the later style.

Wait for John Kunkel to chime in, he'll know for sure.

If your converter is still good, then you are ok. Keep the 19 spline shaft and converter and just use a weighted B&M flexplate for the cast crank engines, about $80. Bolt and go.

I wondered if i could do that with the cut-out flex plate. I have one already for another project.

Wondered if you could do what? Use the weighted flex plate? I see no reason why not but if you find any issues please let us know. As far as I am aware you should have no trouble bolting it up. I don't think there was any change in mounting locations 62-up.

You can also weld weights onto the 19 spline converter, but if you wanted to put the 413 back in at some point, it's a heck of a lot easier to swap the flexplate.

What Montclaire said, just get the B&M flexplate and use your existing converter.

The '67 pilot hub difference only relates to the 904.

i understand using the B & M flexplate to go from external balance (cast crank 440 converter) to internal balance (413 converter). Another question: the snout of the 413 converter is smaller in OD than the pilot opening ID on the cast 440 crank. will that make any difference in using the 413 piece with a B & M weighted (cut-out) flexplate? Hate to be so uninformed but have never done this before. Also, any options for replacing the cable shifter? I have the stock 63 Chrysler 300 floor shifter in my truck. Thanks again, JP in the land of OZ.

the snout should be the same size according to John K above , if it's not you could make a ring that pilots the 2 together .

All 727 converters have the 1.810" pilot hub..from '62 until the end of production. Some early 904 converters have a 1.550" pilot hub.

The '64-'65 console shifter can be used on a '63 trans but the valve body would need to be changed to a '64-'65 console unit.

that's what i get for listening to a friend. He said the snout was smaller on the earlier transmission. i will have the 413 out and 440 in this weekend if the converter works out - sounds like it's a direct fit with the conversion flexplate which i already have. thanks for all of the tech info guys!
