can someonoe explain the difference between the 4 pin and 5 pin ECUs and when they were used?

You can replace a 5 pin with a 4 pin But not vice versa.

5 pin ECU's use a 4 pole ballast resistor
4 pin ECU's use a 2 pole ballast resistor
