I had the same problem with an old plate, it was recommended that I reset it by hitting it with a hammer in the middle of it. Maybe the original poster can explain the details.

You are just using one large gasket aren't you? There should be no gasket in the center where the hollow double ended nut goes. Make sure that the plate is flat.

Clean it, if it's Dirty. Oil it, if it Squeaks. But: Don't fix it, if it Works!

I have the small gasket between the plate and the block and also the large gasket between the plate and block.

Get rid of that small gasket and just use the large one. The small one is not used with the plate. Only with the angle adapter. using the small one in the center is not allowing youtighten the plate down enough to seal.

you are welcome! Hope it works for you. I always use a liberal coat of axle grease on the gasket to hold it in place. Also seems to help seal. Works for me anyway.

I had the same problem when I used a High Volume oil pump. The seal just can't hang. My friend had the same thing. He found an O ring that worked.

Good luck with that.

When I was pre-lubing my 318 on the stand, I found out the plate was leaking. I took it off, and tried the hammer trick. Still leaked. Tried a different plate - and it was fine. 2 weeks of driving, and that plate leaked. I got a brand new one from the dealer, and that solved the problem.
My conclusion is to replace with a new one every time.

"Hey mister, something's wrong with your car, it idles roughly" - number one comment I got in Israel when daily driving a 70 Barracuda with a lopey cam.

Currently working on - 1966 Dodge A100 van 318/auto
Finally - disc brakes on the front.
In the plans - rear disc brakes, B&M 250 blower

i had the same problems as the 2 posters just above. the plate leaked. tried a new gasket. it leaked (A LOT).

I put the right angle adapter on instead and it worked like a charm. my plate looked flat, looked great. couldnt explain why I dumped quarts of oil....

My point being though, you still only use 1 gasket and that on the outer ring of the plate to block surface whether you use used or new. The center has to seat metal to metal for the outer rim to seat tight enough to create a good seal.

That`s why I suggested to get a new plate because once they get bent it is hard to get them to seal again.

I just bought a Felpro gasket, part number 70522, for my filter plate. Its really really thick. I first cleaned the block and plate with Brake Parts Cleaner to remove ALL oil film. Then I put a thin film of RTV sealer on each side. Then bolted plate to the block with no gasket in the middle. I then ran the oil pump with a priming rod. With 80 pounds of oil pressure not one drop came out.

I'll be sure & copy that # for the next time I'm there. but it makes me wonder if the other gaskets are just too thin/inadequate or if a plate over time become less concave & the outside rim isn't being drawn down tight enough.

One thing to remember is to never use a gasket in the middle. They aren't designed to have one there and like I said before putting a gasket there decrease the amount of crush applied to the out ring gasket. If you lay the plate on a flat surface with the gasket under it there should be clearance between the flat surface and the center of the plate. This allow it to be drawn down tight.

When I put mine on with the fat Felpro gasket there was a small gap in the middle between the plate and the block. So with no gasket in the middle tightening the fitting pulled the plate to the block which puts a nice clamping force on the outside of plate.
