As I alluded to in my last post about the MP shift improver package, I'm going to be rebuilding a transmission to go into my '74 Charger. Will be used behind a mild 400 for now-who knows what will come or where it will be used in the future. I have the following transmissions either in my possession right now or will be have within the next week:
'77 New Yorker 440 '76 Cordoba 400HP '74 Charger 400HP '77 D300 400 and one unknown BB car
I do have a few SB 727s kicking around as well, but IIRC nothing pre '75 or so?
I will check the rail #s before teardown to confirm they are the original transmissions as installed by Chrysler.
Theoretically, the truck one should have the heaviest duty internals, right? (4 pinion front and rear planetaries etc.) It is a short tailshaft version with the fixed yoke so it cannot be used as-built. I am thinking about using the best pieces out of it and installing them into the '76 Cordoba tranny ('76-up is the break point for spline count on the planetaries, correct? Plus, the governor "should" be a higher-upshift version with the 400-4HP?) From that point, I will rebuild with high-energy frictions and bands, a TF2 shift kit, etc.
I understand that in my application, I could probably get by with a rebuild of any of the long tailshaft versions that I have. But seeing as I have the extras laying around, seems that the extra time mixing and matching parts would be time well spent. Is there anything else that I should be salvaging, or trying to find before I start the reassembly?

I would think that would be the case , using the car one would be better , I wouldn't expect it to be over 4500 rpm in either case. You may also find the same Planets in the 76 400HP trans .

So possibly I should be ordering higher-speed governor weights to install at the same time then?

You just never know I'd like to get it right the 1st time as I really don't want to have to pull the tailshaft in the car-'73+ B-body with the bolt-in torsion bar t/member are not much fun as I recall. Does the caveat still apply about manually shifting causing 1-2 overlap, or does the shift kit mods clean this up. Or was it a tall tale to begin with? Thanks again Jason

I'd spend the time & $ to give A&A Transmissions a call. They have developed a lot of nice components even for build like yours. I bought a 4.2 lever, blocker tube, Trans-Go TF-2 and 5400 rpm governor weights for a 3.55 geared street car that would see occasional track but lots of thrashings on the street. The governor was around $60, lever about the same and the blocker tube was only $9. Oh, yeah, got some extra springs springs to release the front drum/clutchpack. The blocker tube takes out the dampening that the front servo does. Manual trans guys will be stunned and amazed!!
