Anyone have an opinion
On how close
The top ring upper surface
Can come to the bottom of the head gasket?

Some of the engines
That have done well in
Enginemasters competition
Seem to gain a bit
By combining the
Crevice volume of the head gasket
With the crevice volume above the top ring

Reducing total crevice volume
Usually results in
Less unburned fuel
More power, better fuel economy

Do you mean how thick is the top ring land? All the newer motors from OEs are getting pretty thin up there they are doing it for the reasons you mentioned. They are also mostly useing hypereutechtic pistons to reduce piston expansion so they can run tighter clearance above the top ring and therby reduce cold start emmisions. Some makers are putting piston number stamps on the bottom of the piston instead of the top to further reduce crevace volume so I would say it is pretty important.
