i usaly use the dupont pre clean on paint prep or another auto paint similar product.is there a hardware store alternative?im not really concerned about savin a few bucks as i am the drive,nearest auto paint store 20 mi,hardware store 3 blocks.

On metal parts, I just wipe it down real good with laquer thinner and let it dry for a few minutes. Always cuts the grease/grime and evaporated quickly. I would imagine mineral spirits would work as well. Hell probably just about any solvent would work.

You would have to be more judicious on platic parts though...probably use the nice prep spray on those.

im more concerned with wipeing down between paint coats.

Why do you wipe between coats? You can use a tack cloth to pick up overspray,lint,dust,e.t.c. But if you must wipe between coats for whatever reason,use prep solvent that was made for automotive refinishing.

BTW, using lacquer thinner or acetone prior to paint is a bad idea.Because they both leave film behind,which can cause poor adhesion leading to chipping and peeling.

Use appropriate product if you want durable finish.
