Under the cluster/gasket is there just the brass rod or is there a check ball below or on top of the rod. The kit had a ball but it may go in the pump inlet assy which I did not unscrew or elsewhere???. Thank you for your time live every 24 hour block of time like it's your last day on earth

That being said, and it's been a few years, it should have a ball under the rod in the cluster passageway. I accidentally dropped that ball into my intake when I was troubleshooting a pump shot issue. Eventually, the 318 coughed it out but I wasn't gonna tear the engine down for it. IOW, I distinctly remember that ball. They say there are no such thing as a stupid question. They say there is always the exception that proves the rule. Don't be the exception.
