Ok, I just finished installing my fresh Copes Pro-Street trans and started to adjust the kickdown. I installed a bolt and nut in the kickdown slot because my factory rods were not long enough to work with the new Carb/intake combo.

Heres the problem. If I adjust the kickdown so the lever is all the way back at WOT. Then it will have about 1/2" play at idle position. And the other way around also. If I adjust the linkage so the kickdown lever is at full forward position at idle, then it will have about a 1/2" play at WOT.

It's as if I need a different intermediate lever with the rod attachment farther out!

What am I missing here?

From what I see, I cant have it both ways. Lever forward at idle, lever back at WOT. It's one or the other and I have to compromise.

But which way should I compromise?

I had the same issue when I set mine up. I decided to have it correct at idle, so it was resting against the carb pin. This would not let my lever at the trans be all the way forward at the same time. then just do adjustments down at the Trans (thats where mine are made) and test drive after each adjustment until the shift points were where I wanted them. Make sure and check your shift points at part--throttle and wide open throttle. You want your kickdown linkage to move as soon as the throttle moves. You don't want any play at all there. Then you can make your adjustments to the Trans lever in order to get the shift points that you want.
