OK...who can tell me that these three dimples are for? What plant, what dates were they used? Any info will help. Some cars have them and some don't.....whats up!!

The three dimples are located on the passengers side, straight up from the blower motor on the cowl.

No exact dates but generally speaking early production 1970 cars won't have them, later cars will, the NOX requirement started in 1971 so only later 70's showed the demples (they were getting ready for 71 early on, all plants).

Hi Scott, Hope all is well.

The Hemi car picture I posted had a date of 808 and there are no dimples. I have been looking and many cars recently and I can't find and clear cut date on when these were used.

Here's the firewall on my '71 BH23C1B "pilot" car - it appears to have been built in April '70. (not sure if it had "dimples")

It likely did Dan, that NOX valve same style as my 71 Duster came with (October, 02 1970 SPD)

As I mentioned, it was random in 1970, some had them, some did not, early cars less likely, later cars more likely but not definative. They used parts with no real inventory control back then, no "first in first out" as we commonly see today, it was not a mandated 1970 model year change, just a part that changed during 1970 production. Same applies to other 1970 sheet metal stampings like inner fenders and hoods with and without crush zones.

When do they start production on the next model year?
My 71 challenger (with dimples) was built in sept of 70. I thought that was an early build for a 71.

1971 Challenger
2013 Jeep Wrangler
1979 Dodge Ram Power Wagon 400 Mini Pumper

I'm the first to believe this....nothing was set in stone. but when you find something out of the norm I have to start thinking. I saw a car that I believe is an early car and it HAS the dimples. It is a Hamtramck built car.....can this be??

Since there was no "norm" on this topic (known cutoff dates etc.)other than generization there's really nothing out of the "norm" to be noticed, only a variable.

.... but who are we not to ask question? I think this could be an interesting topic. Lets see where it goes.

I was talking to GG one day while we were looking at my car (before it was restored) and he even noticed that I had a "early firewall". My car was as original as can be so he noted it and that was that. Now I came across a car and it is the other way....early car with a late firewall. How can this be??

The cars were not built in order of VIN.

They were not built on their SPD in a lot of cases, often not even the same month as the SPD.

Incoming stock was mixed with old.

There are too many variables, there is no way to pin down an exact change date because there wasn't one.

I agree that you are not going to pin down a date, but there are going to be some specifics that can be said about the 3 "dimple" upper firewall on a '70 e-body.

Did LA use this part? With e-body production ending in May '70 - did they recieve any of these firewall panels?

Since it appears April in Hamtramck was the some do & some don't "month" are there any built in March with the "dimples" (& I'd say any in Feb. '70 or earlier would be suspect), or any in May without the "dimples" (later w/o would be suspect).

"Pilot" cars are built pre-production, production of 1971 model year Chrysler Corp. cars started in August of 1970.

TROY..
Here is a thread from 3 years back this same question was asked. There is some good info & photos here. In 70 and 71, more & more emission stuff was being required with California cars being about 2 years ahead of the other states..

Also around that time (July, 71) Chrysler was shutting down their Commerce, CA factory just off the 5/710 interchange. So their other factories located outside of CA had to be capable of building cars to meet the CA emission requirements during this changeover..

Just my $0.02..

The LA plant stopped producing E-bodies some time in May of 1970.

Hamtramck produced N95 E-body models for the 1970 model year also.

If you have a March 1970 or later E-body, note the SPD on your tag / broadcast sheet, the actual build month from your original door sticker & whether it has the dimples or not. That will be a start.

This is what I'm looking for. I believe that there might not be a definite date but just looking for a ball park date will work.

With all of this being said....is there anyway by looking at a dash VIN number can you figure out if that car should have the dimples?

Yes & No. A dash VIN# will give you a SPD, but not an actual production date.

It should at least put it in should/might/shouldn't category. I have not cataloged any info on this, but it sounds like GG has.

My old R/T SE has a SPD of 723 & does not have the dimples... I guess it's suspect.....

I have three pictures of the tag and they all look like 808. I don't know if you saw this car Dan. It was that survivor Hemi Challenger that showed up late at the last Spring Fling. Very cool car!!

My old R/T SE has a SPD of 723 & does not have the dimples... I guess it's suspect.....

I was trying to point out that there is some rhyme/reason and/or pattern to the dimple vs. no-dimple. The "maybe" period could be the last 3 months of the year. Your "former" car could be the lone exception for the end of July '70, or the last month of production might all be without.

My 702 SPD '70 Challenger R/T was finished at least 2 weeks late. It has many '71 attributes.
My 801 SPD '71 Barracuda was assembled at least 2 months early. It has many '70 attributes.

I have three pictures of the tag and they all look like 808. I don't know if you saw this car Dan. It was that survivor Hemi Challenger that showed up late at the last Spring Fling. Very cool car!!

Yes, and it's B08.

Sorry about that. There's sort of a blob of paint right on the SPD there and my camera was not set at the high quality setting.

The SPD on my pink car is 324 but the door mylar is 4-70. It has the dimples.

Your car is a great example of one that was built late. Looking at your broadcast sheet info & the other sheet you found in it for the 318 car, the 318 car was 43 builds before yours, but the SPD on it is 401.

The closest one I have on file so far after yours was 29 builds later, but that car has a SPD of 417.

So, for these three cars, the SPDs are quite a ways of, the VIN spread is 23,516 yet they were on the assembly line at the same time 74 cars apart with yours near the middle.

Hey Troy. That's my T/A that I had in the Invitational Building in 2010. It's an April car. I'm not home now so can't check the actual build date, but will check it and my other ones if you want.

My Shaker Challenger has the same SPD, is the same color as your car and is within 200 VIN numbers. Yet mine has the dimples.

Your car must be suspect

1. In 70, the original firewall tooling for the 70 E-bodies had no dimples
2. In 70/71 as California cars required the Nox device, the firewall tooling was revised with the dimples
3. In 71, cars being sold in California had the firewall dimples punched out to accomodate the Nox device
4. In 72, when all states required the Nox device all firewalls had the 3 holes punched out

Just my $0.02...

Early cars, no dimples.
Mid run, most cars no dimples but a few did.
Late run. most cars had the dimples but few did not.

As I said, I need more data.

My AAR has a spd of 4-02 on bsheet, but has 3-70 on door and also has dimples. Is this a problem?

Not a problem. For that late of production it would be more common to have the dimples.

Seem like most of the T/As and AARs did have the dimples. Knowing when those cars were built that makes the most sense.

You're right. Had to look back, but no examples of LA cars with dimples.

Thank you all for your input.

You sir are correct.

It's JS23V0B440xxx built 7/23/1970 - a very popular day for building N96 Challengers.

The lastest I've seen is 730.

IIRC that red V code Challenger that was at spring fling many years back was a 730 car

That car would have a fun build sheet to look at. Was it a "spicial order" car? How many 1971 Parts were on it?? What were the date codes on many of the parts....early...late?? Very interesting...

Thanks for the info.

With all this being said there is still on early cars with the dimples....

Well there were a lot of changes that got implemented around January 1970.

I know of an early build 71 Barracuda that has the 70 style engine cowl (without the E in it)

Also in 71 they changed back to using 2 torsion springs for the decklid.
