Ok took the ol masking tape and my digital calipers drill the holes its 3/8 from the bottom i see the pickup has to be either one side or the other of the oil drain plug the oil pan is a 6 quart miladon knock off it has a baffel lip all the way around the sump the section between the holes i got that part of the lip out but just no way to cut any on the ends so took small hammer and beat it down flush to sides my concern is compressing the nylon washers to make it seal do you guys use anything between the washers and pan???

Too close means that the suction efficiency varies depending on the design of the pick-up mouth. The pick-up "curtain area" is a function of the head circumference (or perimeter) × depth to the floor. If the pick-up were an 8" disc, it could be 1/8" from the floor. IMHO 1/4" is as low as I would use with conventional parts. OTOH, there really is no maximum height from the standpoint of safety, as long as the pick-up is submerged under all conditions. However, if it's too high it gets hot aerated oil that just returned. For oil quality you want oil that has been in the pan the longest time.

Ultra Grey silicone. I have 2 motors w/ ext. p/u systems. Both have the DMI sealing washers w/ O-rings and both use the same oil pans. The one on the cuda leaked like crazy so I siliconed the snot out of it...no leaks now. The one on my road runner doesn't leak a drop w/ nothing but the o-ring washer.

Is your swinging pick up open on the end or just on the bottom. I had a Milidon swinging pick up and it had the screened opening wrapped up over the end of the swinging arm from the bottom. If that is the case, you may want to go with a 1/4 clearance.

Use o-rings between the pickup body and the pan. NO NYLON washers ... they have too much give. Use the large Milodon steel washers between the nut and the pan and they will enable the o-rings to seal.
HOWEVER, this is all for naught if you don't use sealant on the thread into the pickup. No sealant there will allow oil to seep past the threads, past the o-ring and to the outside of the pan.
I use pipe sealant and because it can be messy crap I put the sealant on the bulkhead threads, put the fitting through the hole in the pan. I stretch the o-rings over a socket that is large enough to go over the bulkhead fittings. Slip it over the fittings and roll the o-ring off the socket and onto the fittings. = no crap on the o-rings. Now screw them into the pickup
