I run an front engine plate on my car and was wondering if cutting off the motor mount bosses on both sides to save a little weight on my next build would compromise the strength of the block in those areas. I figured that the cylinders in those areas are probably reinforced by the presence of such bosses. What say yee?

hi
well if the block is a 75 or newe prob not as much of a loss as an older block as you will limit the reasale ability should you decide to change to a dif combo in the future . someone wanting to restore a car will not want such a block prob 95% mopars dont run plates !

look in the for sals race sections there is one there now i think !

how much weight realisticaly can you save by destroying most of costomer base that may want it after you are done with it ??

diet 2 days befor race and save some that way ???

are you trying to bracket race or set a national rechord ?

food for thought

I had to grind them off when using the stock blocks in my dragster, did not hurt anything. In a race car I have always read the best way to take a 100 lbs off a race car is to find a 100 difference places to take off a 1lb.

2 pounds here and there adds up quick... if you
dont plan on using them for fore/aft limiters...cut
them off

Yes, they look like a good place for limiters. Otherwise, just weight

I agree. The only problem is my car would require 500 places to make a real difference.

There is water between the area the ears are and the cylinder , the cylinders are only attached at the deck and the main line bulkhead.

I concur. Every ounce counts and if it can be a pound here and pound there, I'm happy and my car is happiest.

It's one of the many small reasons that my car weighs 1940 lbs.

It use to be a standard part of block prep when running a front palte in modified production and pro stock, cut all the protrusions off, not just the motor mounts I have seen blocks that lost 40 lbs by removing the protrusions and grinding the sides of the blocks down with a body and die grinders, remove the thin casting wall behind the cam timng gear also lots of 1/2 and full ounces out there

Wow! I would not go to that extreme, but I do get the madness. There are pounds and ounces in them there hills on the sides, insides and fronts of blocks I guess. I'm just an angry little street car that needs to keep the Fat off.
