Seems to me that a 440 dart would kick ass if done right?

Some have asked how fast I wanted it to go?
.. Honestly think I can make it run consistantly low 12's (with a gear change)
low 13's just as it sits !

What do you consider to be kicking butt ? L88 vettes and a 70 Hemicuda are running well into the 11's at the pure stock drags.

I will respond in more detail later, but the 68 GSS Darts were factory cars that rolled down the assembly line as 383 GTS's without engines then shipped to Hurst-Campbell for the 440 install.

Now thats news to me. All the years I have been around Mopars I was always told MR Norms installed the 440 engines in the 68 Darts at his dealer. Ron

It would make these cars legal then I assume , similar to the cars that were built by the factory and shipped to Yenko , I'm pretty sure those cars can run in their raw form but not as a Yenko ?

What really muddies the water is that Chrysler built 6 drag cars the first week of January slated for the Winternations. Chrysler got wind of the Cobra Jets and convinced NHRA to allow the 440 in the Dart in a Experimental situation. These are the cars that Landy,Mancini and Rockville Dodge got. They were hand done at Ted Spehar gas station. These are the cars that got the fenderwell headers. They were all 383 GTS cars as well. They were all done in January and Norms deal was in April.

Cool cars.

So they could run in FAST as long as they had no engine in them, that way they would appear just as they did out the factory doors.

Cars were shipped to Yenko, Baldwin Motion, and others with engines. They would then take the engines out, and sell them to customers. And install 427s or 454s.

These cars wouldn't be that lethal as a FAST car. The carb, intake and exhaust manifolds all suck and and the heads arent that great either. Just look at what the Chevrolet guys have with their "compact" big block Nova's. Big dual feed Holley, Nice high rise intake, canted valve big port heads, better exhaust manifolds. Heck you can even run an "842" rectangular port aluminum head in one of these packages. If you were to do one of these for FAST, a low deck would be a better option, but you'd still get your asss handed to you.

I bet you can get a small block Cleveland Mustang to outdo a 440 Dart or Cuda if both cars got the same level of effort.

Sorry to be the wet blanket....

Norm has told me they did do the first couple at the dealership but more than 45 of them were done as I stated. I agree with the last poster, the cars would not be good for a FAST car the way they were built. Heck, most of the factory cars were built with 67 383 exhaust manifolds, I have documents around here somewhere that state that. Norm said he never put fenderwell headers in these cars, Iggy's muffler in Berwyn, IL made custom underchassis headers for them. And like another poster said, there are those 6 or so cars that Landy et all got to race in Super Stock that were custom built at the factory, so I can't answer the question of whether they would be legal or even competitive in FAST. Here is a factory GSS block that I bought last weekend at the Indy swap!

Why did they cut the rear motor mount lug off Jim? Steering box?

I agree with Mike and Jim here about not being a good FAST car. I think like Mike says the induction just sucks. I think the intake is more of a problem than the exhaust is. All the big block avs type 4bbl combos have just been DUDS.

That said it is a perfect car for a Kid to get his feet wet in drag racing which is exactly what is going on here.

If I was 17 and somebody handed me a 440 Dart to beat the death out of I sure would be Grinning

Yep, there was minimal interference with the steering box, especially when the engine torque was at max. By 69 the factory built cars did not have the mount boss shaved. They did not offer power steering with the 440 A-Body's but did with the 383.

Its a shame Mopar did not offer the 440 six pack in these cars in 69 or 70 with a type of factory header like the 64 Hemi cars had. They would then be a killer combo for FAST. Or to even built some Darts with Max Wedge engines. 440 Darts are real fast when you add headers , good intake and carb and a nice solid cam. To bad they were so limited from the factory. Ron

Ron the 64 Hemi is not allowed in FAST for that exact reason , the factory header .

Tom , if the car doesn't have power steering there isn't really a need to cut it off .
