Hey Moparts Brothers, I am installing a mild Mopar Performance cam-shaft in a 340 for a customer. It is a hydraulic camshaft from them. I've prepped the lobes w/both Comps Cam lube & lots of Lucas assembley lube everywhere. It already has the Brad Penn break in oil as well. I am just seeing what R.P.M.'s & run times people are using to break them in now. In the past it was never an issue, however w/these new cam blanks, which they are blaming on the oil I am concerned. Any input would be great!!! Thank You, Ken Michalik

I learned a great tip from Jeff here (Jericogtx): Mark each lifter, then rotate the short block. Those that don't spin, change lifter bores. I tried it, and sure enough, the last non roller engine I did, needed some juggling of lifters.

Sounds like you have the proper lube covered. I like to fire them up and keep the RPMs around 2k or so varing the engine speed from time to time for at least 20 min. I usually do this for 30 min just to be sure. Just put a Lunati VooDoo HYD. in a friends 340 with no problems so far. Never had a problem in past engines either. Good luck.

It's important to make sure the engine fires quickly, lots of cranking on a new cam is bad.

If it was put together with cam gears dot to dot it's set to fire on 6 not 1.

Run it between 2000 and 3000 for at least 20 min. if you have to shut if off to fix a leak or something no big deal. Just restart and continue where you left off.

Take care,
Rick

Its funny but some years back my brother calls me
all up set and screaming at me why I wasnt over to
his house yet to help break in his cam(chevy)that
the headers are all red... and I told him to advance
the timing... but he said he didnt have a light...
so I told him to shut it off and I'd be there soon...
well he figured if he shut it down it would wipe out
the cam... finally he shut it down...when I got there
and calmed him down I asked... were you willing to
burn the whole engine to the ground instead of maybe
hurting the cam... he didnt have much to say... so
we fired it back up and I added some timing and all
ended well... ran real good
