Something to consider is that you can take the engine out seperately with a carb plate without removing the hood, usually the worst part of the job.

Made a rookie mistake when I was a teen... If you pull both together (or install both together), make sure the trans is drained, and the rear end of the trans capped off. Fluid in the trans will quickly empty in your driveway when you have the engine/trans assembly tilted at a steep angle.

I did the exact same thing as a teen in 1985.
Boy was my father mad.

Common sense and caution are factors which cannot be built into any product. These must be supplied by the operator.

.......jack the back end of the car as high up as you can get it and pull the two together. You will have no problem at all.....

This sounds counter-intuitive but IS the best way. Leave a creeper under the car to rest the trans.tailshaft on. On my Stepson's RR we could do almost everything this way and no stretching over the fender to work.

This method did not work worth a crap for me. There is not enough room to slide the cherry picker under the front end of the car in my situation. Even tried loosening up the motor mounts but still couldn't get the right angle. I ended up putting the rear end back on the ground and jacking up the front of the car and everything lined up fine. I won't waste my time jacking the rear end up to install the motor again. This was in an A-body but I would still do it the traditional way in any other body style.

I can't see this being a problem unless the hood is left on. I should have mentioned jacking the trans to bring it to height once the engine is close to position and putting blocks on the creeper then loosely installing the trans mount.

In sixty-five I was seventeen and running up one-o-one I don't know where I'm running now, I'm just running on Jackson Browne-Running On Empty

We just pulled a mated 360 and A833 out of our Dart, up through the engine bay, leaving the hood on. Plenty of clearance, but 4-speeds and all their parts are a PITA to get out, they hook on EVERYTHING. Cripes.
