Hi, I need to remove the 318 and the 904 from my 74 barracuda. Should I take these out together? I need to clean up both, then seperate and send the 318 out to be rebuilt.
I will be buying an engine hoist, I do not have a stand yet. So I'm trying to formulate my game plan.
Thanks.

easier coming out seperate, easier going in together. Pick your poison. I'd say pull both, that way you can service the trans while your motor is out getting work.

I'd pull them together. You'll find it quite an easy process using a leveler, so you can manipulate the angle as you hoist it out of the engine bay. If you have some scrap 2X10's or 2X12's laying around, you can build a simple "stand" to set you motor on until you're ready take it to the shop. Just build a rectagle box, just wide unought to set you oil pan into. For that matter, stack up a couple old tires to set the pan in.

This was my idea as well. The transmission seamed ok when I parked the car four years ago. I think just a fluid/screen change and belt adjustment. Its been a while since I've done this stuff.

To the other posters, I just picked up a hoist a few hours ago, and it came with one of thoses levelers. I hadn't even heard of this piece before, so thank you for passing the knowledge. I already have a friend lined up to help with the removal. Thanks for all the advice, I think were gonna try to remove both together.
I'm going to post again when I'm ready for some ideas for holding the engine and trans while seperating. Wood blocks and tires will probably be fine though.
Thanks,
Chris.

Those levelers work great, but just a hint when you use it, especially when reinstalling the motor. Use the next to the last pair of intake manifold bolt holes for the rear chain, not the most rear ones.

You have no idea how you get when you finally have the whole mess almost back into position only to find out you have to pull everything back out because the chain is hitting the firewall and you can't go back far enough.

A leveler is a must if pulling together, but if they both have to come out, that's the way to go.

Check Harbor Freight for levelers. I think I paid $30 for mine 5-10 years ago and it works really well.

Jack the rear of the car way up to minimize the tilt required to clear the rad support. Definitely a two man job.

.......jack the back end of the car as high up as you can get it and pull the two together. You will have no problem at all.....

Definitly take them out togeather.

Homemade by me, took a piece of 1/2" cold rolled steel and heated it up and wrapped it around a piece of pipe and then welded the ends.
Been using it for 30 years dozen of times, best part is was free.

This sounds counter-intuitive but IS the best way. Leave a creeper under the car to rest the trans.tailshaft on. On my Stepson's RR we could do almost everything this way and no stretching over the fender to work.

Cool!! what I like about it, it that it is compact and never get's in the way.
I have used it on many engines including International gas truck engines, 392 and MV404 which are huge and weigh way more than 440. So after those jobs I trust it completely.
I didn't use this cheap chinese hoist though when lifting bigger engines, I have a larger hoist at work that is way more hoist that these cheap ones. I like it because it folds up and is easier to store in my little home garage.

Always working by myself.

No chains in the way or bulky leveling devise overhead to reduce your lifting height.

Pulled this engine and tranny Sat morning to replace core plugs and was driving it Sunday in the afternoon.

Thanks for this advice, I'm not sure yet how this will help, but I'm sure it will become apparent when I'm doing it.
Thanks also for all the pictures. I'm gonna stick with the leveler that came with the hoist, since I bought it and my welder only goes to 1/8", and I'm not sure if I would trust my welds on this anyway.
Chris.
