bobs66440 OP top fuel B Joined: Mar 2010 Posts: 1,880 Out in Left Field, NY	I found this in my gasket kit. It says to fill the side seal cavity with RTV, then dip the pipe cleaners in WATER and push them into the cavity?? Has anyone used these before? Seems really odd to me.

471Magnum master Joined: Jan 2003 Posts: 3,719 Space Station #5	They eliminated the rubber vertical seals and replaced them with RTV. RTV requires water (usually from the air) to cure. The wet pipe cleaners introduce the needed moisture. I've used a couple of them. They seem to work just fine. -Jim I can fix it... my old man is a television repairman. 440newport master Joined: Jan 2003 Posts: 4,588 St. John's Newfoundland	Yes, on the 400 I rebuilt a few years ago I used that kit. It seemed really odd to me too, but I followed the instructions and it doesn't leak. It does looks pretty crappy though and the RTV really gobs outward toward the main cap. Make sure you push the pipe cleaners all the way down too. When I squeezed in all the RTV I could down the side channels, I could still see light coming though near the bottom when I checked with a flashlight. After pushing the pipe cleaners down it seemed to seal. I also RTV'd the retainer to the block from the back as well. Like I said it works, but is pretty messy.

Dipping the pipe cleaner in water and inserting it into the cavity is to aid in the curing of the silicone RTV by releasing oxygen within the cavity. I designed these and have been selling them since about 1991 with excellent success. Just made some dimensional changes in my tooling to make the installation easier for those that don't use them every day or have the motor on the stand. 7072629-GEDC0254cropped.JPG (276 downloads)

CYACOP master Joined: Feb 2005 Posts: 3,958 SW Fla.	That whole Felpro Kit Sux. I took the best of care doing my 440 and it leaks a few drops and is all over the trans pan all the time. Mine is probably the seal not the sides though. This topic comes up all the time. Use the rope seal, call Carquest.

Decided to change out the stock retainer for the billet aluminum one Mancini Racing sold with the o-ring side seals with engine in the car....STILL leaks 1MYTGTX

When you slide the housing with the side seals into the block, the little rubber seals stretch. Over time, the seals pull back. I had a least 1/4 gap at the bottom of each seal. I had cut them off flush when I installed them. I got new seals (didn't want to spend more money on another housing). This time I added RTV into the grove before I installed the seals. Hopefully this will keep them from pulling back. I also waited a few hours before I trimmed the seals flush, maybe gave the seals some time pull back. From the back of the block I also RTV'ed the seam between the block and the seal housing. I haven't fired it up yet to see if this worked. Nothing worse than having a re-done car and engine that leaves oil everywhere you park.

( or whichever material is ) seals, stock pieces from an Old NOS kit and working great by now. Of course I helped a little bit FILLING WITH RTV the outside face of seal retainer with block ( the Groove left there ) LOL With a Charger born in Chrysler assembly plant in Valencia, Venezuela
