Well Ive been trying to fix the last two electrical issues. I would first of all like to admit my electrical ability is weak at best, but Im learning.

Here are the issues
The Fuel and Temp guages do not work. I have checked the wiring going to both guages and 1 side has 12 volts and the other has 5 volts which comes from the voltage limiter. Both sides of the guage when I touch them with my test light pulses, which I assume is correct because of the voltage limiter. I checked power to the temp sending unit and it also has power. the connection on the tank has power as well. The ground strap on the fuel line is in place back at the tank.

What am I missing or does anyone have what my next steps should be??? I believe it sounds like a grounding issue. Is there a ground for the guages?

Thanks Dennis

I would say ground the sender wire at the tank to see of the gas gauge needle swings over to check that gauge but w both of em not working I'd say a wiring open under the dash. With your VOM see what you have at the bulkhead. then work forward or backwards. www.mymopar.com has diagrams

Where are you saying you have 12 volts ? It sounds like you mean at the gauge ? I mean one side of the gauge should have 5 volts pulsating and the other side goes to the sending unit. Ron

Thanks guys for the Help Yes both of the guages have a pulsating light on both post with my tester One side is just brighter so I figure it is 12 volts side right? Have not been able to find anything disconnected or damaged. Even all the connections light up on the voltage limiter.

did you ground one side yet?
or take them out and wire 2 AA batteries in series and put one end on each post and see if the gauges move at all.

Im pulling the cluster tonight Plan on checking the guages then. I have an open when I check it today with my multimeter.

I pulled the power wire off the voltage limiter and it has 12 volts to it when i check the output side it also has 12 volts and should be 5 correct?? Sounds like it pretty common these go out. Any suggestions on a replacement part most auto part store do not carry these. The ebay ones are they any good? Appreciate the help on this

not exactly.
it averages out to be 5 volts.
the pulse you see in the light is it opening and closing the circuit to make 5 volts on average.

so you would probably see 12 volts on a voltmeter.

what you need to do is tape 2 AA together so they are in series and then wire up the ends to your gauages and see if they work next, since you have it out.

I wired up a couple of AA and hooked them up the the guages per your suggestion. When I hooked it up it pegged out so they must be good.
A buddy of mine wired up my voltage limiter he added a chip and resistor to the inside and the output now reads a constant 5 volts. Im putting it in today and will check the tank and temp sensor wiring and I should have everything working soon..

I appreciate everyones suggestions and help!

actually they shouldn't peg out. they should read in the middle, to middle high.

I don't know about all gauges, but I have check 65, 66, 67 and 68's the same way and they don't peg.

but good luck and let us know.

And just incase, you are expecting these to read plugged into the car, but do you have gas in the tank? or are you going to ground the sending unit wires?

Well I used 3 aa batteries for my set up trying to get close to 5 volts. Hooked into each side of the guage Would 3 batteries make the guages peg out? I hooked everything up and checked the voltage at the temp sensor wire 4.98 volts and 5.02 at the gas tank but the guages still do not move with the car running. I have about 6-7 gallons in the gas tank and I have the ground strap hooked to the tank line and the body fuel line. Any other suggestions

ah, yes 3 would do it.
I had suggested 2, so it made 3 volts to check the middle.

6 gallons may not be enough depending on how bad the sending unit is adjusted.

you need to ground the wires to the temp unit and gas tank with the car off.
Then turn the key to on/run not start and see if the gauges move.

If they move then your temp and gas tank sending units have an issue.

if they don't I am not sure because it sounds like you have continuity to them.

Well it worked as well with the fuel and temp guages it shows a hair about 1/4 tank and same on the temp guage. Do I need to have a better ground on the tank?

replied to your pm.

but could be both sending units are bad, or the fuel one is just misadjusted.
or as you said could be bad ground.

you can test the tank sending unit by moving the arm and reading ohms on a multi meter.

guess you could do the same on the temp sensor by boiling it. see if it changes.

Andrewh thanks again! I did change out the temp sensor last night and I will add some gas to the tank today. I remember checking the float switch before I put it in back a year or so ago. It worked fine. As you may know a 73 Ebody tank has the j bolts under the rear valance and the fuel float access on the left side of the tank next to the muffler. Not real fun to get to, that will be my last resort if necessary. Right now the tank guage does move to in between 0 and a 1/4 tank when I turn the key on with a ground jumper so I hope the additional fuel does it. I think im getting closer. Need to work at my daughters house today so may not get to the car till this afternoon.
