My 318 uses two studs/nuts and two bolts to attach the carb to the intake. Were the studs installed before the engine was painted or after?(should they be blue or just phosphated)

Also, there is a small bracket up by the carb. The kickdown pivot piece attaches to the intake bracket and then to this piece. The end of the kickdown rod bolts to this piece also. Was that bracket painted engine color...left natural...or zinc plated? I can take a pic if knowone knows what I'm talking about.

Does anyone know? What about 340's...even the BB's? Did they use studs to attach the carb or just bolts? If studs, were they painted?

I don't think studs would ever have been painted. If they had painted them it would be hard to get the nuts on and there would be paint on the surface where the carb gasket would sit. As far as studs or bolts for the carbs what year and engine would make a difference.

Mine got painted when I sprayed the engine. It looks like I'll be stripping off the paint. Thanks for the help.

Now I just need to find out how that kickdown bracket piece needs to be finished.

I don't ever remember seeing paint on the carb studs on a virgin 318. As far as the bracket, I'm thinking that you're talking about the bracket that holds the throttle cable and also the kickdown linkage. If so, the bracket itself gets painted engine color, but the throttle cable hold down and the stud it goes over are zinc or phosphate. All the kickdown linkage and rods are zinc or phosphate too. I don't know if it's zinc OR phosphate though. Good luck.

I'll get a picture of the bracket in question so there's no guessing. I want to get this engine looking correct. Thanks

I forgot to get a pic of the part I'm talking about. I'll do that tonight and get it posted.

OK, here's the small bracket in question. The kickdown linkage bolts to it. Right now it's painted with stainless steel paint. I need to strip it and refinish it properly. I just pulled it off the engine...that's why you see some blue paint on it. Thanks
