John, everything is made to be broken, that's why there are replacements.

Do yourself a favor, put a DANA 60 under it, and have no worries.....I've toasted so many 8 3/4 axles/chucks, I won't put one under a decent small block, nevermind a bigblk unless the build requires it

I've even wasted a DANA 60, they're not indestructable, but a he11 of a lot more than a 8 3/4 IMHO.....

spend the once, rather than twice

don't know how..340's can barley make enuff power to spin the tires. It must have been really old and worn out. That or you had a ton of wheel hop.

The only 8.75 I have wasted are the ones with stinkin off shore bearings despite big price they are junk. I love all the nay sayer about the 340s and 8.75,if this is the case why haven't prices dropped on them as much as the big block cars?

It regularly got spanked by an 81 horizon running on 3 cylinders ...

to all the non readers out there SAE engineers put the 8.75 (741) vs 9 inch to the test years ago and found the 8.75 was good to 500 hp and the ford 9 to 450 hp---the 9,s weakness is the pinion sitting at the bottom of the ring gear-----yes the after market chased the 9 the way it chased the sbc so there is a ton of things that can be done to it to make it stronger---but after spending $1000+ you might as well build a dana 60----and if you think the aftermarket is really right maybe you 9 inch guys should belly up to a sbc and gm trans and laugh at us forlorn mopar guys and our backwards ways(and dont even get me started on the 8.8)bob---hahahah

Some of you guys have mega tuff 8 3/4's. I have broken gear sets and twisted axle shafts in them with street tires.
My take on it is if it's working well leave it alone, if you have a 500 inch engine and are going to spend upwards of $600 for a new tru track and bearings to install it, maybe you should consider spending the $2k for a Dana and be done with it.

Early funny cars and dragsters ran Blown Hemi's with 8.75 rear ends. The drivers important parts sat straddling the pumpkin.

Like everyone has said, with street tires you are not going to have trouble.

If you had a stick and slicks dont use the 8.75..

I would recommend the POWER LOC differential unit.

When it comes to new street car builds, I always wait until I break the diff to upgrade.

Radial tires (street tires) were not made for all of a suddent all out WOT. They were made for driving. If you want a tire for "sudden starts" you are going to need some sort of a slick. Even a well tuned 3182bl is going to smoke up a radial. I have a set of tires I use for driving and a set that goes on for the track.

Just sold my Borg-Warner sure grip uni for $250 (was a really nice unit - looked almost new) and ordered a Detroit TrueTrac for $420 with free shipping!
That's $100 less than retail
