Made a lot of performance upgrades to the 72 Road Runner the past year or so, including replacing the stock 340 with a 410 stroker, and installing a 2800 stall converter.
Thus far I haven't experienced any cooling issues withthe 22 inch radiator, but I haven't pushed it really hard in the heat.
I'll cross the bridge when I get there on the radiator. Pretty easy to tell when it's time for an upgrade there. Just watch the temperature gauge.
You can't tell until it's too late on the transmission though. Not unless you install a gauge anyway.
I figure I'll take a preventive measure by installing an auxiliary cooler. It's cheap insurance and always good idea when increasing stall speed.
I want it to look like it's supposed to be there though, not some shiny aftermarket job.
I plan to run down to the local pick-n-pull to see if I can find something off a full size truck or van that would swap on with some modification. I can bend up some lines, so that's no concern. I'm more concerned with the bracketry.
Anybody else done this? If so, I'd like to hear the details and see the results.

OEM transmission coolers were in the lower radiator tank unless ordered with towing pkg and then the external cooler was added in the front of the radiator.

No. Many late model vehicles and most trucks have external coolers these days.

A friend of mine slid my 99 F350 into a snow bank and damaged the power steering cooler. Went to the j/y looking for a replacement to no avail, but did see lots of newer trucks/suv's with aux trans coolers. The looked jike my p/s cooler, only bigger. They have mounting tabs to mount to the core support and threaded nipples to secure the trans lines. Shouldn't be to hard to make this work in an older car.
Yes that is recent models. but he is talking 72 and in that era OEM trans coolers (unless ordered with HD cooling or towing pkg) were in the lower radiator tank.

Plenty of them on late model trucks (from smallish to good sized) They will probably have fittings you will not be able to use (metric, quick connect, etc) but be pretty basic to cut and flare the factory hard lines and join them up to something else. Even 70's era had them. My old '77 D150 stepside had a factory trans cooler nearly the same size as the a/c condensor (it was an ex-Caltrans truck, so maybe ordered with a heavy duty cooling package or something?)

The comfusion is he asked for STOCK APPEARING .
The shiney aftermarket units are a can of black paint away from looking OEM.
If you want to see the look you are after find a picture of a Hemi car with an automatic , they had external add on coolers .
