There is a 68 Charger on ebay that I am considering bidding on. I ask a question of the owner about the VIN and body numbers. I wanted to know if they matched and this is his answer.
Question: Does the car have matching numbers on the body panels and does it have the fender tag or build sheets.
Answer: The body panels match, but do not match the VIN. In 67 and 68 it was not uncommon for the body numbers and the VIN to be different coming from the factory. I do not have the build sheet, but there is a photo of the fender tag in the pictures on the auction.

My question is has anyone heard of this the body panel numbers not matching the VIN and coming like that from the factory.

Correct, in 1968 the VIN number is NOT stamped on the body: Plant Year Body (B8X in this Charger's case) was used with the SO# (shipping order number).

SHOULD BE:
VIN # = XS29L8B2075xx
engine = 8B2075xx
transmission = 8B2075xx
SPD = B17 (Friday, November 17 1967)
Shipping Order # = 092900
core support = B8X092900
trunk lip = B8X092900

IMO - VIN sequence is appropriate for a 11/17/67 Hamtramck vehicle (VIN tag & FENDER TAG are from same car).
