I'm getting ready to start assembly on my 408 for my 70 Duster. One of the few things left that I need to purchase is the oil pan. The car will mostly be a street car maybe to the track once a year at the most. I have a HV oil pump, will be running a windage tray and the oil passages in the block have been massaged a bit. Should I run a stock pan, buy an aftermarket or possibly take a stock one and have it cut and re-welding for a bit more capacity? To me the car sets a little lower than normal so clearance might be an issue?

Any advice/opinions would be appreciated.

Just out of curiosity,are you using main studs?

Is go with a stock pan if you're not going to beat on it too much. I ran a stock pan on a 360 that I spun up to 7,600rpm every pass for 8 years. HV pump and all. If you do go with a stock pan, I have a brand new stock replacement 360 pan, gold zinc plated, that ill sell for $50. It's easily paintable if you don't like the gold. PM me if you're interested

I went with a Milodon Stock replacement for my 408. It has some basic baffling (I had to modify it for the oil pump pickup to clear.) I figured it was cheap insurance to have straight pan rails and baffles.

#1 baffle the pan. Wouldn't want one lower than the Kmember. Side kickouts. Might run an extra qt on track days. EDIT I'd want the pickup 1/8" off the bottom but with a welded 5/16" nut on the bottom so the pickup ain't suspended but is contacting the pan bottom firmly at the nut

The moroso pan works very well,but for a street car it hangs pretty low,I ran one for years on the street and track without issue. The milodon will give more ground clearance. I'd skip the factory windage tray with any real pan. The stock pan is good for a planter,but not a real engine build.

I run a deep pan on my car w/ the 440. No problems on the street. However my car is stock height in the front. If you are lower, I advise against anything that hangs under the k-frame.

I say get a deep pan ...maybe two quarts more than stock. If it hangs down past the K member ...and it probably will .. just get a skid-plate. Now if you wants to spend big-bux ...to not use a skid-plate .. the kickout pan is the plan .. but it will HIT YERR WALLET real hard.

didtch the windage tray and usa a crank scraper. check out a canton pan that is baffled.

Thanks for all of the advice. I'm planning on going to the Indy show in March and see what I can find there. I was kind of looking for a 6 qt pan but can't seem to find anyone that makes one. Right now with a stock pan on the motor that's in the car now there is about 3 in between the bottom of the pan and the ground. So a really deep pan probably won't be an option.

Two things on small blocks one is which block are you building, 340 or 360? Many NHRA stock class race cars use "stock" oil pan, mandated by NHRA rules. There are several diffeent versions of oil pans for both blocks, 360 is different than 318 and 340 on the rear main bearing cap size Look around for the deepest stock oil pan you can find with a center sump and then add a slosh, deacceleration, baffle on the front of the pan at the top of the pan where it starts to go down into the sump, you can vary the hieght as needed to clear your crank and rods, put it as high as you can, make sure it sticks out two to four inches and is fitted tight to the oil pan to keep the oil in the sump Don't forget to put a hole in it for the oil dipstick to go through Add a acceleraton baffle also, it needs to be trimmed to clear the oil pick up, that takes time and pateint I use paper first to get it close, trim it until your happy and then transfer it to thin gauge steel and fit them up A good tight fitting crankshaft scraper really helps keep the oil in the pan, same thing on mock up with stiff paper, I use a old gasket package for headers or intake gaskets to cut up for the mock up

Kevco-- makes a baffled trap door 6qt stock depth pan. i believe # is M302 for 360 block. It will fit stock chassie.

The Kevco one looks pretty promising. I'll probably give them a call.
