Ok, I'm building a '66 Coronet Vert........originally a 361 car but has a '66 383 in it now. I really want to put a 440 in.

My question is, should I look for '66 year motor? Is it looked down upon to use a different year motor? I have the opportunity to pick up a '66, '68 or '69 440. Which would you go for? I'm leaning towards the '69. Any thoughts would be appreciated

Thanks, Mike

The 68 or 69 engines, if original, would have the better flowing heads.

As of 69 is when an additional structural web was cast into the engine block. And then as legend has it the blocks get softer towards the late 70's.

Knowing that, I'd run a 69-74 440 block and who cares what anyone says.

Well that answers that! Guess I'll go with the '69 since its the first year of the strengthening rib and better flowing heads

I'm still interested in more comments on the subject though

440 motors where not offered in Dodge or Plymouth B bodys in 1966 They where offered in Chrysler New Yorkers and Imperails only in 1966 and maybe( I'm not sure either way on these ) 1966 Dodge and Plymouth C body 1967 Dodge R/T, 1967 Dodge Chargers and 1967 Plymouth GTX where the first B body that where sold with 440 Magnum or RT motors Bottom line is it only matters to you and anyone else who cares about the block castig dates

There isn't really anything special about stock 906's , especially in 69, nevermind the [Edited by Moparts - Family Friendly Site - Keep it clean] open chamber design .

As far as era correct , are you going to be pointing out to every passerby that you have a 66 440 in a car that never had one to begin with ?

you asked...

A 440 block is a 440 block. Who cares if it's got some different numbers stamped onto the ID pad?

Add 1966 Chrysler 300's and 66 Plymouth C-body cars (including wagons) to that list.

Personally I'd use a 400 stroker with all of the era correct bolt ons so it looks like a 66 361/383. Or if the 400 bugs you find a 66 vintage 383 and stroke it instead.

If you go 440 I'd use a 66 block (why not, probably one of the cheepest year anyway they are all basically the same, use any era heads you wish).

Not unless you are trying to pass it off for origanal.
In my opinion once you no longer have the origanal motor, anything goes. It ill still look period correct. How many folks are gonna go looking fot the numbers and then complain about what you have.
Zero with any sence.

I have mechanical Aptitude.

Thanks for all your comments guys.

I guess the reason for me asking is I also collect, rebuild and restore vintage 70's & 80's BMX/Freestyle bikes and everyone is looking for era correct parts to do a restore. Also, I see a lot of guys asking for specific year/date codes for engines and tranny's in the Wanted Sections.

Personally I don't care that my motor year doesn't match the car year. Just trying to gauge the feeling in the Mopar world is all.

My car is far from original and is being built to satisfy my happiness I am working on a deal right now to secure a stock bore '69 440 so the next time I post it will be in the Members photo section with build progress pics

Thanks again, Mike

You are contradicting yourself in those to short paragraphs. If your building it to make YOU happy why in the world would you even give a .... what the rest of the mopar world thinks?

Ignore the date code correct crowd , we have issues you'll never begin to understand.

My happiness also cares about building something correctly. I'm fairly new to the building of OS Mopars so if it turned out that having a correct year engine for the correct year car was a big deal then yes, I would want to do that. That would mean something to me. But since it's not really a big deal then I won't sweat it and go with what ever suits me.

If trying to make the engine look period correct, the color it is painted, any accessories that are added (like custom valve covers), and the way the engine (and engine compartment) is detailed will be MUCH, MUCH more obvious that the numbers cast or stamped into the block.
