I have just bought my first Mopar, its a 1966 Chrysler 300 with a stroked 440, 18 Spline A833 and 8 3/4 and I love it.
The only issue I have is the the gearbox is really noisy in 1st, 2nd and 3rd but perfect in 4th, the noise sounds like gear on gear meshing and its intrusive.
It shifts very well but but I dont want it to sound like a NASCAR in those gears.
It is summer here, I have checked the oil level and topped it up with 80w / 90w as it had leaked slightly. I dont think the leaked oil was ATF (not red)
Any thoughts?

not sure what the noise is, but i would at least drain it completely and refill it with something on the heavy side.

One or more of the bearings are bad, sorry It could be the input shaft bearing, output shaft bearing or the needle bearings in the input shaft and or the needle bearings in the cluster shaft. I will bet it is in the cluster shaft needle bearings if it is ONLY noisy in 1st,2nd,3rd, and reverse, which all involve the cluster shaft driving the output shaft throught the gears being used reverse is NOT synchromesh or helical cut so it will alweays be noisy when backing up. One other thought is the input shaft bushing or bearing in the crankshaft being beat up or missing

Try a 50/50 mix of Lucas Oil additive and 80/90 wt gear oil to see if that helps. My old Duster 340-4spd was noisy on upshifts but that mix really quiet it down. It had ATF in it previously when I bought the car. Original 4-spd with 92,xxx miles and it never gave me any problems.

1970 FE5 Duster 360/904/3.91's SOLD 1973 TB3 SpaceDuster 340/4spd/4.10's SOLD Moparless for now but when the opportunity is right I'll have another one.

Yeah, tear it down ASAP. If you keep driving it, broken teeth are a distinct possibility.

Not hard to rebuild (but, OK, I've been doing 'em since '65...)

Thanks Rick, its beyond an oil change I will take it out this weekend.
Any recommended rebuild kits? I have contacted Passon and Brewers, both of them will freight to me here in New Zealand

both are good, be sure to talk to them about what trans they have as they have different input bearings, syncros etc... just to be sure you get the right parts the first time.

To be sure because shipping ins $$$, pull the side cover off and send some pics to them - they should be able to ID what you need right off the bat. You can pull the cover off in the car (drain the oil first)

You should probably disassemble it first. Might just need one bearing (the center bearing on 23-spline trannys is what I always failed...) or might need a lot more.

I was gonna be changing planes in Auckland in March, could have had a heavy carry-on... ;-> (Decided to go NYC-LAX-MEL, going to Chryslers on the Murray, Wodonga, Victoria, Australia. Wanted a 747, not A380).

As others have mentioned I would take the trans apart so you will get all the parts you might need in one shipment. Here is some helpful info for identifying exactly which trans you have.

Any questions just let me know.

Hi Dan,
Thank you for responding on the forum, I have been trying to respond to your email but keep getting some sort of server security error.

I will call you once I have it out and order the correct parts.

Andrew

I had the same problem, I found the only issue was the front bearing and you can change that without tearing the trans. apart.

Pulling/reinstalling the trans is 99 percent of the work. If you're gonna do it, take the time to tear it down and go through it. Very basic stuff, probably the easiest part of that car you'll ever have to rebuild. Instructions/specs easily found online and parts are readily available. Good luck and enjoy..BTW, I personally would never replace any part that checks out as good...Almost ANYTHING you buy these days is questionable at best...

I was going to pay a local gearbox guy to do the rebuild but I'm starting to think that I could save some real $$ and learn something by doing it myself.
Thanks for all the help and friendly advice

Thanks Dan I did get it, I'm going to set up a GMail account as my work email is blocked by your provider (no idea why). Thanks for keeping in touch, really great service which I will be sure to pass on to others here.

Find a good shop manual if you don't have one. Also get a dummy shaft for your cluster gear or make one from a wooden dowel rod. You'll also need a bearing splitter and some snap-ring plier and a shop press. Its not a tough job at all. You can do it. The press work you can farm out to a local auto machine shop. Just don't waste your summer down there
