wondering if anyone has used one of these clutches on their car. my challenger is basically dual purpose (street/strip) with me wanting to do more racing than street driving (as funds permit).

it's an ez-head 440 with a hughes cam (548/555) M1 intake and supercomp headers. 3" exhaust 18sp 4 speed. 3.73 gears. goes 11.6-11.8 @118

i've been running a ram 3200# plate with the 900 series disc. very heave clutch pressure. i'm thinking the McLeod dual disc will grab and hold better and be much less pedal pressure, which could mean faster shifts.

oh, and i already have the new ram clutch to go in the car, wondering if it's worth switching before i do the work.

thanks, Greg

I have an RXT in my car and it seems to work really well. The pedal pressure is next to nothing compared to the Ram units, I used to have a similar clutch to what you have and once I switched over to the McLeod it was a night and day difference in pedal effort and the RXT will take a lot more abuse and hold more power.

If you are thinking of switching I wouldn't even thing twice about going with the McLeod.

I have the RST version (800hp rated). I run very low 11's at over 121mph dumping the clutch at 6k or so with 3400 lbs or so.

Great clutch. Street manners couldn't be better.

My cousin calls it the Fisher Price clutch. It's so freaking easy to push in, like a toy!

ROFL

i know what you mean, i put a centerforce diaphragm in my "drive it off the showroom floor resto" '72 challenger and OMG, what a difference in pedal pressure.

now, i just need to figure out where to come up with the cash to get it.

thanks for all the info

Ran one in my Superbird. You will like the low pedal pressure and they are supposed to last good.

What's your car ET? What gear? Tire size? I'm assuming you power shift??

3400lbs full on street car.
At the track I run 28" slicks with 4.30 gears.
Power shift all gears around 6300-6500rpm with a stock 23 spine A833.
Haven't made a perfect pass yet, but the last time out it ran 11.3's at 121mph with 1.61 60' spinning the tires and lifting the front tires. This year I hope to get 11.1's and then dump open the exhaust and see if it picks up.

This RST clutch has seen probably 2,000 miles too. Lots of street driving, stop and go, and some highway. Drove it last year to and from the Mopar Nats, Drag Raced it on street tires, cruised and drove back home.

Great Clutch!!!!!! Truely the Best of Both Worlds.

It has never ever slipped in my setup!

I lauch by relying on some tire spin the keep from bogging the motor down. At the track, I usually get about 10 to 15' feet of tire spin and then it grips.

So many positive comments, curious, what does it weigh, Ie alum FW, what its rated dia, and any noticeable performance gain by being smaller/lighter?

Reality check, that half the population is smarter then 50% of the people and it's a constantly contested fact.

You might also consider a Tim Hyatt Mcleod based slipper clutch. Loosen up for the track, wind it up for the street.

I just bought a RXT for my Challenger after talking with Red at Mcleod. The discs on the RXT are basically the 600 series discs just smaller diameter. The RST is based on the 100 series disc. RXT is a better value if you look at the price difference of the 100 and 600 series disc.
I was not planning on a dual disc setup but I read a lot good reveiws on it from mostly late model vette and mustang guys.

I also run the McLeod dual disc in my gtx and with about 4000+ street miles and track time has not missed a beat! As said pedal feel is light but it sure does Bite!

Many years ago I had to get my info from Mustang and Vette guys, because I found absolutely no Mopars running this clutch.

I spoke with Red, as well.

I was probably one of the first Mopars to really try out these dual disc's from McLeod.

Nothing really,...just a street car.

Stock front, SS springs in the back, subframe connectors.
Cool little horizontal shock above the rear center section to absorb pinion climb and wheel hop. Rear was moved back 1.5" and I use Rancho 9 way shocks in rear. 90/10 CE shocks up front.

Very similar to my build eccept 68 cuda, stock springs with snubber, qa1 adj shocks all around and 408

I had a twin disc McLeod clutch in my car about 6 years ago or so and holy crap, it hit way too hard at WOT while power shifting......It felt like the dash was going to come out of the car on every shift ..........It was so brutal I just took it out and sold it.......bought it from Steff out of his Challenger when it had the Hemi in it......It was nice driving it around on the street......it even had a brutal shift while granny shifting.....

Don't be confused....these are not the same clutch that you tried. The RST and RXT just came out a few years back. You probably had the "Original" twin disk that requiered it's own Flywheel and such.

These RST & RXT clutches use a stock flywheel.

Granted, they still hit hard, but I purposely got the RST (800hp rating) because it is supposed to have a much smoother engagement for driving around on the street....and it DOES!

The RXT (1000hp rating) is the same setup as the RST, but with different discs. They engage a little harsher than the RST, but no where near the "Original Twin Disc".

My car will never ever ever see above 650hp...probably never over it's current 550hp or so.

So 800hp rating and great street manners is the best of both worlds for me!

Yeah, I understand.....that's why I'm curious about it...

Thing that worries me is;

I'm curious what'll happen when the car hooks up?? I've been low 1.50 sixty foots and have never had a traction issue, unless I mess up the burnout.. and if I leave anywhere over 3K, my motor runs right through the clutch......

My car makes about 590 at the crank and weighs 3,550ish.......with 4.10's and 27X10.5 Hoosier Quick Time Pro tires....been 10.66 @ 127 and would like to get it to ET where the MPH is.......car should go 10.20's-30's if I can get it to 60 foot good.......

There was a time I could have given you the exact weight. Not tonight though. What I remember was that the RXT was lighter than the comparable single disc and pressure plate. It wasn't a lot, but it was less. Any little bit helps when the engine has to get it moving fast.

I've dead hooked mine a couple times, and it just bogs it down hard. The clutch just won't slip with the power I"m making. Never has!

I'll typically bog if I launch lower than 4,000rpm. Nothing breaks, just doesn't run good numbers when it hooks up 100% at the line and the clutch is 100% hooked. Something has to slip a little to keep in the power band.

So I launch near 6,000rpm and it seems to work. I can always work on getting more traction at 6,000rpm launches and see what happens.

Slipper clutches are great, but too expensive for what I do! Too much maintenance too.

I'm sure I'm leaving some ET on the track, but what I do works enough to keep a smile on my face!

By the way, just had my car out for about 10 miles, stopped at a friends house and took my son to visit his buddy. Love driving it. Started snowing about 1/2 hr after I got home.

My new DPSS shift light works great. I really like it!
