I'm restoring my 68 Bee does one brand fit better than the other? I'm looking to buy all the weatherstripping and want to use the highest quality pieces I can get . Thanks

I only use/sell Metro in my shop for door/roof rail/ trunk/quarter window weatherstripping. Top Cat gets the call for cat whiskers.

That car was so nice, I would try to clean and re-use the original door and roofrail weatherstripping if its really nice. I usually have problems with fitment with the repro weatherstripping, especially the doors. The material isnt pliable enough and the doors have a hard time closing.

I'm with HPMike on this one - had to pitch my metro door weatherstripping after many hours of fitment issues. No matter how I adjusted the door hinge bolts, it just would not close right. In desperation, I yanked it all off and voila, perfect gaps all around. Ended up saving all the clips from the metro and transferring it to my originals, and after installing it back on, it works beautifully. Had the very same problem with my trunk lid, but as I glued the weatherstripping on before fitment, all I could do was to live with a hard closing lid. It seems the aftermarket stuff is much harder to compress than the originals, causing all sorts of headache. If you can, I would just find nice used examples and clean them up real well. It takes some time with steel wool and some heavy duty soap, but after application of some plasticizer (armor-all etc),it looks just like the new stuff. If concours is your goal however, NOS (ca-ching)would obviously be the hot ticket.

Beyond the material difference, the stuff just isn't molded correctly like originals. They took a bunch of shortcuts when repro'ing them.

Same goes for cars they made tons of like Mustangs. So even with cars that have volume sales they do a lousy job.

If you want metro I'll send you the junk ones that i bought.
At the Nationals 2 years ago I found a guy with a nice super bee and he told me soffseal is who he got it from.
If I don't pm you tomorrow send me one and I will go check it out to make sure I'm talking about the right company.

EDIT: I just checked it out now. Metro ones do not fit right at all. I still can't believe I shelled out ~$100 for those. Pure junk. I pulled off what is on my car now and it is Soffseal. Installing and uninstalling the soffseal was easy as can be.

Soffseal
Metro

If this hasn't convinced you, I have a pair or Metro seals for sale, slightly used.

Agreed!....I've gone thru this with customers 68-70 B bodies, 71-2 B bodies and 70-74 E bodies, I've sat there with every manufactures seals, door and roofrail, trunk lid, etc, etc, fitting and re fitting,...on the door seals i always seem to end up using clean used/NOS originals, trunk mouldings aren't bad, but the door seals really suck regardless of the manufacturer,...I've thrown hundreds of dollars worth of Metro, Soffseal, Steele, etc in the trash

Add Metro's A body roof rail weatherstrip to the list. I have bought 2 sets just to be sure the first wasn't a mis-boxed set. But they are a good inch too long along the windshield.

If they are going to make this stuff, is it really that much harder to make something that actually works?

Good question . . . I had tried new stuff on my 76 Road Runner, and could not close the windows with the new stuff ! Had to go back to cleaned up old weatherstrip !!!

I just put the weather strip on my 70 Sport Satellite. Door stuff seemed ok, but the roof rail weatherstrip, would not allow the rear windows to go all the way up, and pushed the windows on the doors out, so you could not close the doors.

I had saved my old roof rail stuff, cleaned it up, put it in, and voila, PERFECT fit !!! I am sure that one of the issues with the new stuff, is that it has not taken a set, the way the old weatherstrip has. However, perhaps the stuff could be made a bit smaller, so that it will take a set, after time, but allow things to line up and close . . . .

I put all Soffseal stuff on a 1970 Cuda build a couple years ago. The stuff was so hard I spent over 8 hours tring to adjust door and 1/4 glass to no avail.. Not to mention the stuff was so hard I had to slam the doors to get them to close (I was worried I was going to break the glass they were that hard to close). And when you pulled the handles up they would POP open , same goes for the decklid.

Holgar ( aka sixpackbee ) offered to send me all Metro to do a comparison 1st hand.
Once I had all the metro stuff on
I had both 1/4's and both doors glass's adjusted in under 3 hours. The doors now close without having to stand back and slam them shut.

I also just put both door weatherstrips and roofrail weatherstrips on a 1969 Charger just this past week. I have ZERO complaints , none, nadda , nuttin. Only thing on this Charger build made by Soffseal is the vent wing frame weatherstriping. I have both door glass / vent wings adjusted pretty well. And both doors close with ease. I am waiting on a 1/4 window regulator before I can move to the rear window adjustments to finalize everything. I have not installed the decklid weatherstriping yet so I can't judge it yet.

Part for me that sucks is Soffseal is only about 30 minutes from me . I could run over and pick it up in person and have it that day.

Bill,....I know some of the Metro Super soft stuff has improved over the years, the 68-70 Charger doors seals for me never worked out, had the same issues you described with the SoffSeal stuff,...the Metro roof rail molding on the 70 Charger was usable, but it took hours to get it to sit just right, esp with the rear qtr windows,....I never had any luck with the door seals on the 68-70 Roadrunner, Metro/Soff/Steele, nothing fit/worked, I ended up hunting down either NOS or nice used for the B body doors, a big problem I noticed is either the profile is larger than original, or the durometer is off the charts on firmness, I'll agree the Metro trunk lid weatherseal was good, as were most of the hood pcs,...the Metro B body vent window moulding/weatherstriping fit like factory, I was surprised at that, as the vent window rubber is a rather intricate piece...

Every bit of the metro stuff for the charger was bought within the past 6 - 8 months,, so I have no prior experiance to compare to on a B-body.
But so far so good. I'll know within the next week or so if any issues in regards to the 1/4 windows (customer is bringing me a regulator to replace the one in the car thats bent.)

The Soffseal stuff on a 1970 Cuda ,,,sucked and went in the trash can (all of it ) .

Ok, lunch is over , back to work

I reuse originals whenever possible because they fit like they should obviously. As far as the door seals, new ones take time to get crushed down some. I've had more trouble with the roof to glass seals than door seals.

So nice reading others have same issues and feelings as we do about fit on new weatherstrips. Bout only advice I have is we have used a silicone glide on new ones. Rub strips down with it. seems to help door and deck lids slip shut better. Have even used spray lube on a rag and wipe them down. Sucks putting a car together only to have nice lines before install then have to reset everything after install. Only option is install everything then take apart and paint and reassemble everything. Always say I would love to find a customer willing to pay me twice to build their car. As far as brands I have used soft seal and metro. Seems like its depending on car on how good or poorly they fit.
