My car was ordered and used as a Texas Highway Patrol car but it was a Medium level car spec'ed with all the HD police stuff and then some by THP. Yes it has the Special Mask tag but it is probably a car you and most of us would consider a police car. Sorry if this does not help any but I gave you something you read. Merry Christmas

anything is possable.
i have a 72 B5 blue feb 29 built date car with a NAD PAINT tag.
B5 blue was never a NAD PAINT color. and feb was a little early for a NAD PAINT tag. when i painted the car there was 6 coats of paint on the car, including under the hood. i have spoken with the original owner at a car show. he says the tag was there when he bought the car. he also says the car was never painted when he had the car. he was also the only driver of the car. i bought it from a flipper who bought it from him and parked it till i got it.

...interesting...my Virginia State Police Fury doesnt have that tag and they were custom painted at the factory, even has two seperate 999 paint codes (VA cars are blue over gray in DuPont fleet colors)
I guess the fleet order my car came in didnt get the tag because VA ordered a large number all at once so they were all done at once in a big batch?

72 Fury built at Newark with a May build date (PK41U2F) It just has one normal fender tag with all the police codes and 2 999 paint codes, which Im assuming is for the seperate blue and gray colors. Come to think of it, I dont remember seeing that tag on any of the police cars Ive looked at.

Dan, If I could please....does your car have a second tag at all? If yes does it only say "Special Order"? I'm guessing your VON starts with a letter. Might it be either J or K?

Interesting tag. I had never seen that before. The cop cars I dealt with were 68 through 77 Fury Is, Satellites, Coronets and Volares. Colorado State Patrol and Aurora Police Department are where I worked but they ordered cars totally white. State had some different color sneaker cars but they were solid color too.
The state cars came with a roof antenna option where they installed a Motorola NMO antenna base on the roof and ran the coax down the B pillar to the trunk. I do not remember the build sheet code for it or if they noted it on the fender tag.
When the cars went to auction, Colorado had a requirement that the winning bidder agreed by bidding on the car to repaint the car to two tone or other solid color than white. Most wound up with black vinyl tops.

It's a 1969-1/2 A12 Road Runner in mono-tone R4 red, no vinyl roof with a black interior. The tag has been on it since it was found and the tag looks like a match in condition to the car's original tag.....there's thought that this may have been a media car of some sort (magazine test, car show, display, etc.,.......is that possible, would Chrysler's media department ask for special paint or any special care for a press/media car?

Figured it didn't need "special mask"; I was thinking the terms were always used together when "special" paint or finish care was needed. Kind of like "cc" is still used but always meant "Carbon Copy" and when was the last time you were "Carbon" copied besides the "Quicky Mart register" 
Were the terms Special Paint or Special Mask ever used by themselves or were they always used together?

Barry, Ive looked at a lot of police cars, including some CHP cars where the doors were painted different colors than the body and dont recall seeing a tag like that. Maybe it got the tag if a police car came through that wasnt part of a fleet order?
