I used to use only Fram PF8 filters, but have been hearing how cheaply they are made with the relief valve. Any suggestion for the best brand of oil filters?

Wix, Amsoil, Mobil 1 all make good oil filters.

Wix or Napa Gold (made by Wix) Do NOT use Fram PH8A's!!!! HP1's are ok, but not the PH8A

What's wrong with the PH8A?

There is lots of negative information about them floating around.

The pics that Neil posted pretty much say it all but mainly (in my order of Fram disgust)
1) The cardboard end caps
2) The lame filter media
3) A very questionable bypass valve

Years ago the Checker, Schucks, Kragen chain sold them for $2.99. On Sale they were $1.99. Fram built itself a decent reputation back in the 60's and 70's (and did an outstanding job of product identification/marketing with the orange)with fairly acceptable quality then cheapend the product in the worst possible ways in the 80's while enjoying widespread consumer acceptance. They sell mega millions of these POS's.

I stopped using them in the 90's. In Hindsight I would have stopped sooner, but I guess I got away with it (sold cars before any oil or filter related failures).

I think Fram is a classic case where the managers destroyed the product just to make some bucks. They spend a ton on advertising so that the suckers will still buy the product but the managers gutted the product and turned it into a joke. Eventually they'll go out of business once everyone figures out that they're being sold the very cheapest possible thing that could be called a filter.

good to know! It's been almost 15 years since I needed a PH8A.
I am breaking in my motor, and will be changing the filter/oil in 500 miles. I am assuming the PH8A on my car will be ok for this...right?

I not much for the fram ph series but the have others.

The TG tough guard
the Dg double guard
and the XG extra guard as the price goes up the questionable parts get replaced with better ones.

The old saying u get what you pay for.

I was once a Fram devotee, until I saw the cut apart comparasons at a NAPA store of a Fram vs NAPA (Wix).
My local parts stores don't carry Wix, so I normally run Purolator. They have them on sale a few times a year, so I stock up with a dozen when they are. Purolator has a filter area equivilant to Wix filters.

I hear nothing but bad things about Fram filters. Check out this web site where a guy cut open and reviewed tons of different types of oil filters:

Thanks for the responses. I thought I had heard that the NAPA filter was made by Wix and that it was one of the better quality ones out there.

I use Purolator filters.

I thought the black Mopar filters were made by Fram.

Purolator Pure One and Wix here.Never used a NAPA filter but my Dad likes them. Used a couple MP Race filters but couldn't stand the 20 dollar Price tag.
