Maybe Im having a mid life crisis (at 35) but I just cant find the motivation to work on my car or race it... seems like everything has got so damn expensive, NHRA rules get tighter and tighter... Keep thinking maybe I need a new or different car to re-spark my interest... Anyone else been thru this?

yep. been there and done that. it seems like all you do is work and have very little time to do anything else. then when you do get to race, it's a lot of work, expensive and if you are in an area that has a lot of cars, you don't get very many runs down the track or you have a tech guy that's harsh and reads the rules a bit differently. it wears on you. what i did discover was that once you sold your car and don't have another, you remember why you got into this sport to begin with. you might want to do something different to your car to make it more exciting.i am trying to make the car run the same numbers but with a drag radial using the same suspension.

I don't get "bored", but I have been "burned out" spending so much time with prep, driving to/from, long days/nights at the track etc.

I still love it. And sometimes just a couple weeks without working on the car or being at the track for 12 hrs for 4 runs... and then I miss it and want to race some more.

I'm not sure where I'm at with my car, all it needs is the paint, everything else is done. My car is a street/strip ride, I didn't race a time this year, but I did drive it a bunch.

So I don't know what I'll do with it, keep it and drive it or sell and start something else, maybe not a car, I like tractors too.

I guess sine I don't get to race it as much as I'd like I have no thoughts about putting it away. Have some kids that will change your outlook.

In a word ....No ! But I am a gearhead from top to bottom. I dont have alot of money and I love driving my car so thats why mine is a street/strip car that is 99% street. I love driving it and cant get enough. But at 55 years old and with a bad back and knees I have to make myself work on it when it needs it as it really hurts to bend over when I have to work on it. But I would rather drive and race it anyway. I hope you work it out as thats one problem I will never have. Good luck , Ron

well i had a 10.80 65 coronet and was racing against mostly 12 sec cars and was having my share of red lights with them leaving first.so i put together my 12.00 belvedere, then the well i change this, lighten this, adjust that,i was going rounds with it at 12.00 but the need for more speed led to those changes, now it runs 11.teens.won 2 races in 6 times out this year, you would think i would leave well enough alone.but i'm putting a low deck 512 in the 65 shooting for 10.00.as my wife says[you just can't leave them alone can you].

I gott burned out in 1988,I quit racing, sold one of the race cars(I had two at that time) and went to learn to fly. It took me two years to get my private pilot license due to training after work in the spring, summer and fall. I quickly learned that normal flying wasn't much fun and it is a lot of work Aerobatic flying is a real kick in the pants and I really enjoy doing that I also learned that drag racing gets in your blood, at least in mine , so I ended up driving a car for a friend (that I built a lot of mtors for his restoration business) for a while and ended up making my current street and strip car several years later. I have four other project cars that I want to do from the ground up just like I did the Duster, time and money allowing I know several other dedicated, die hard racers that have switch interest to other things after getting there fill of drag racing No big deal, don't pay money and waste time doing something you don't really want to do IHTHs

Interesting comments. I have built and sold a lot of cars that I wish I had back, nothing exotic just fun. Now at Fifty, 23 years in the airline industry as a mechanic. I have so much nerve damage in my back that standing, walking and even sitting is extremly painful. I have to force myself to work a little at a time and get out to the track. Its now the little things in life. get out and do it what ever it is that you like and can afford.

Glad to hear I'am not the only one that feels this way. After 15 years of racing my a$$ off the kids get my time now.People laugh when I tell them I love working on vintage bicycles now.My 80s bmx collection is up to about 50 bikes now,LOL I still do some race stuff for other people but really hard to get mine out to the track!I think in time the fire will come back but may be way out classed when it does.

I raced Mopars for over 20 years, I just turned 39 yesterday and I started losing interest a couple years ago. My energy level has gone down, my son plays travel sports and I work alot of hours. I'm gonna miss racing with my awesome race buddies and Moparts friends but I've moved on, I traded for a car that I can drive the family around in all day and it feels like a 10 second car. I may get back into it someday but for now I am extremely happy and content.

I almost sold mine, but realized it was a case of depression. Glad I caught that and didn't make a mistake. So if you are losing interest or not finding enough interest to work on the car, check that out.

Thats why I love having my 63 as a pump gas street car driver. $20 bucks and I can throw some gas in it and go cruisin on a weekend night. I will spend close to $100 to go racing as by the time I gas the 63 up to drive the 90 miles to and from the track and then pay the $35 for a T & T or $50 to $60 to run a Nostalgic show and grab a bite to eat I will drop a good $100 bucks. Thats why I only race a few times a year right now in my current money state. But I love it. Ron

I just recently sold my car, due to a lack of time, as my family (wife and two young boys), as well as a very busy business, have cut into the time that it really takes to test, and figure out the type of car that I had. If I was selfish, the car would still be in my garage, but, you just can't buy time. One day soon, I would like to build a twin turbo hemi 10.5 car, but, it will be on my terms, when my boys can enjoy it with me. Until that time, the back seat of my W2 powered 69 Dart, will have some booster seats, and my boys will get their first taste of what a cool Mopar is all about.

I was a little burnt out last season , especially at the start up. Wound up parking it for the rest of the year. Sell it , NO WAY . Cause when it`s gone it ain`t commin' back . Feeling better about things , a lot of non car issues are resolved and I can`t wait for the next season openner . Sometimes a little rest is a good thing.

I got burned out on chasing points. I came real close to selling the car. Glad I didn't! It was costly,150.00 a weekend plus fuel and paying for the family to get in. Plus the brutal heat we had didn't make it fun at all! I hope 2012 will be a better year. I also hope to see my grandson make his first pass next year!! Don't know what he will be in yet,but I hope we can find a car for him!

I set the race car on a side burner last year so I
could build my Rampage for the street/strip... I've
built a few other cars for myself over the years but
had to sell them (divorces) so now I'm REALLY looking
forward to get this Rampage on the street and see
how it runs... between customer cars and my own stuff
I stay real busy... which I thought being retired
was going to be a nice slow pace..... NOT... but thats
my fault... once I get these last couple of customers out
of here I'm going to kick back and start having some
fun and work on my stuff at a more leisurely pace...
after my Rampage is done I'd like to get my 38 Plymouth
on the road(needs interior and a few other things)

every winter i try and change something on the car. one year it was wheels, the next paint, what ever you can afford. selling it is not an option, can't get it back after it's gone!!! replacing it is going to cost more. park it and cover it, do something else for a while, but do not sell it! when your ready it will be there!

Well, glad im not alone on this one... it got to the point that racing was $2-300 a weekend, after a dirty divorce, and having to sell my big tire car, and most of my parts, the black car is all I really have left. I've found that the same money id spend in a nights racing would pay for a weekend at the river for my whole family... or more recently I bought a cadillac CTS-V, crazy thing is my new caddy is way more fun to drive, and in luxury no less! Doubt ill actually sell my car unless someone throws money at me... lol

I use to have a charter business for salmon fishing
that took all my weekends but the fishing with south
so I parked my Searay in my pole barn where its still
setting... I should sell it but you never know I might
pull it back out... interest change but to replace
a toy after selling it would cost much more(most times)

Nope... I would like to do more big money races and travel more if I could.. Love to do big money footbrake/nobox races. And every now and then a box race.

Good luck , Ron

thats my problem too Ron..age and injuries..

you realy dont get bored with the cars...as said...BURNED out..thats why it has taken so long on my 63 Dodge...Im motivated now ...wheres that bottle of Alieve...

Alieve............heck thats like candy to me. I hate to admit it but from my Doc having me on pain meds (tramadol , oxycodone) the over the counter stuff lost its punch years ago. I dont like it but I could take 20 Alieve and it would do nothing. When my pain gets where I cant stand it (which is more then I like) I have to take at least the tramadol and alot of times thats not strong enough. The good thing is I go to a hearing in the next month or two as my lawyer is trying to get workers comp to send me to Pain Management. Ron

i finnaly got my car running low 9,s NA and after about 3 pass,s i was bored with it and wanted to go faster.i have finally come to my senses (after who knows how much time and $$$$$$$$$$)and realize that i will never be able to afford to go fast.now im just consintrating on my street strip ride and will have to be content going slow(10,s) and have the best of both worlds.

Glad to hear I'am not the only one that feels this way. After 15 years of racing my a$$ off the kids get my time now.People laugh when I tell them I love working on vintage bicycles now.My 80s bmx collection is up to about 50 bikes now,LOL I still do some race stuff for other people but really hard to get mine out to the track!I think in time the fire will come back but may be way out classed when it does.

i go in waves. hobby to hobby. mopars, 5.o mustang drag racing, speed boats, bmx bikes etc..... it's a sickness and i soetimes feel i don't have enough time in the day.

i'll never sell my stuff as i always revisit the different interests.

i was MAJORLY addicted to 80's bmx over the last eight years or so.

My motto is "race while you still can"

The way things are going there may come a time when I/We can't.

When I get burned out on one I just open the barn door and say "who's next?"

Try wrecking your car, and look at your investment in shambles. Wait.. Bad idea..

After taking nearly 3 years to get it back up and running, you get the itch back.

I would suggest you try Drag Week.. You have a street car.. On my "Bucket List"

Mopar Billy's thread kind of shines a light on how much fun/work it can be. And what an experience.. It's all about the memories..

I used to street race only for soooo many years.. (you already knew that).. Got bored.. Same ol, Same ol..

But when I met Gecker, it all changed. Just change it up a bit..

The MATS is also a great event..

Chris..

55 years young here and just yesterday started the teardown on my old bucket to completely go through it from front to back. I figured if I didn't do it pretty soon I won't be able to. "old age and all that crap that goes with it " . Anyway I still love it and I guess I will until they put me out to pasture.

sometimes at the end of winter i'm a little burned out from the countless hours i spend working on my junk. but when the first light comes down, the wheels bite, the front pulls up & the G force from 1.3 60's kicks in, i'm happier than a schoolboy who just popped a cherry.

I find it is relative to my income. When I'm makin money, have some in the bank, bills are paid, etc. I get really fired up to work on the car. Lately, not so much.

Been looking for a new career, so hopefully I can find motivation again.

Not really....Frustrated sometimes, I ran Heavy/Pro for over 20 years and never did all that well, the Dart ran mid- high 10s at the time, when they moved the top of the class to 9.00 it got really tough. A few years ago I slowed the car down and put DOT tires on to run Street Eliminator ( 11.50 is the fastest you can go ) and I`m having a ball, I am one of the fastest cars in the Class dialing 11.50s and I`m chasing everybody by leaving last. I have had my best seasons, Points finishes and had more Eliminator wins since doing so.

Yes and no, more burnout at times like Jim said. A few years ago I had 3 cars, two trailers, diesel pusher, multiple engines and transmissions, and so on.
I burned out swapping motors, etc. trying to win a World Championship.
Now as someone else stated I go hobby to hobby! Summer I go tarpon fishing almost every day. I am also an expert marksman and like to shoot IDPA when I can.
Cooler months are for racing. Twin tweenage daughters take a lot of my time as well. And we are very active in our church all year round.
I do get tired of my Dart at times but when I jump in and win a race I remember why I still have it!! Makes it all worth while!

Started in the late 60's with my brothers and gave it up in 1977.Cost too much. Got on with life,Married for 18 years, divorced, got back into racing in 1999.Traveled all over for 6 years racing then life got in the way again and parked it for 4 years. Now it gets out a few times a year.Again cost is a factor.
One thing for sure I always missed it when I wasn't out there.
