My car has uncoated headers and tends to get pretty dang hot under the hood. How much performance gains could be seen from grabbing air from outside the engine compartment?

I picked up nearly .3 when I had the 383 in my car.
One weekend I forgot to put the air pan back on the car, before I left, and the car (in it's current configuration ) was off .2 . I had it back on the next weekend and it picked back up the .2 . The weather conditions between the 2 weekends were nearly identical.

I haven't seen any I think if you see a large gain you were probably running rich to begin with.

Good rule of thumb is 1 percent hp for every 11 degrees reduction. So a lot depends on how the air is flowing to your carb before the cold air intake is added. Another important item is the carb entry. A well radiused aircleaner base is important, and stay away from the lids that have filters in them. From a really bad setup to the best possible you could pick up .3 or so, between lid, base, and cold air. It is a system. If what you have is pretty good, might not see much over .1.

not sure what my gain is but butt dyno shows a bit plus it helps my 11.3 to 1 cr run on 93 pump, this is on a 71 demon twin scoop sport hood.

It's not how good the new system is, but how bad
the old system was.

Going from an unsealed hood scoop to a sealed scoop picked up .1+ ET and 1+ MPH on a low 11-sec. combination. That's "reasonable" to expect from everything I've seen.

IMO people saying they're picking multiple MPH with such a change may be correcting some other issue (known or not) at the same time to see such big gains.

I wouldn't be adding a hood scoop, I'd be drawing from the fenderwells through the caster / camber adjust holes, with a sealed system. My current setup is pretty low budget. Its just a 14" drop base with a 3" element, which makes for a narrow pinch point inside the assembly. This coupled with the choke horn on the primary side of the carb makes for what seems like a somewhat restrictive setup that is sucking in hot air.

Sounds like most people see at least some gains, I think this mod will be in the works for the winter; along with milling the choke horn off, and maybe moving my battery to the trunk.

Thanks guys

If you move the battery you can pick up cool air from the battery vent most models have... may be easier than the adjust holes.

Gary, Here's my setup,4 inch tube through fender w/a flex hose
connecting to the radiator core support.Sucks air next to headlight.
I really don't know if it helps. Mike

I have a large opening under my hemi scoop, would take a pretty big pan to fill the gap, or glass the gap under the scoop and start again.

Good lookin' setup! Can you show us a picture of where the ducting routes through the core support, so we can see where it draws from.

Gary,
I think that I will be doing the plate with the foam around the edge. I will take care of getting the plates made if you want to get the foam......
PS, Red+ Black-..........

I picked up 3 tenths and 3mph.
It was the most impressive low buck improvement I ever made.
