I ran across a 383 in a garage. It has "A383" and "5 4" stamped on the top of the block. The number on the side is 2468130-3 with a date of what looks like 4.28.85 but it has to be 4.28.65. It has a two barrel intake with a Stromburg carb. It has 2406516-8 heads. The brackets and cross member all look like 1965 era stuff but the carb is throwing me off. I am suspect the block and heads are nothing special but what about the carb? Any thoughts on the whole deal? BTW, it also has a 727 (I think) bolted to it.

My 1967 "glenns" manual shows a '65 361/383 to be sporting a wwc-3 stromberg and a '65 361/383 could also have a carter BBD (a 2bbl) EDIT not sure if the stromburg is a 2 or a 4bbl

I've had a number of 383's through the years that were fitted with a Stromberg 2bbl. They were good little carbs, had very few problems with them. Dave

The 65 383 blocks had the boss by the oil pump tapped for the motor mount bracket that was the same as the A Body 383 cars. The D/S motor mount bracket was also same as the one used on the 383 A Bodies. The 440 A Bodies had a different D/S MM bracket. This block will fit into an A Body with the factory BB K frame! Trans is probably a cable shift, a desirable core to have also!

Missed that, yes if a slip yoke unit that'd be a good score

My son went yesterday and picked up the unit and has it in his garage. I'll have him take some pictures of it in the critical places and I'll post them. I just think that there is something different about this engine because the guy that had it was a GM man and I doubt he would have had it taking up space if it was worthless. He was a body man that had restored quite a few GMs.

Don't hold your breath thinking that.

It's a 2bbl 383 , nothing more , nothing less ...

Yup. A 65 383, the most valuable part is the transmission hooked onto it. For the most part a 383 is a free engine, just a little more desirable than a free 318.

BUT, the magic of Mopars...there are no bad 383s. ChryCo didn't have the resources to build different blocks or heads for high and low performance lines of the same engine. So to make a high performance 383 you dump the two-barrel, manifolds and cam, rebuild with higher compression pistons, add the cam intake and exhaust that you want and voila! a high performance 383. That's how the factory made a HP 383.

So what are the three cables coming out of the transmission? One is the speedo, one is probably for the shifter but what is the third one? The question is more to satisfy my curiosity. The tranny will be going in the classified section soon.
The rest of the story is, the engine was part of the negotiations in the purchase of an original '53 Chevy sedan. The seller would not agree to the offer we made but did agree to throw in the 383 and tranny.

Front one is shift cable, middle one is park cable and the rear one is the speedometer

That trans has a front and rear pump You can tow it any where without disconnecting the drive shaft.

You can also push start it!

AND you can use it in a pre-65 pushbutton car while using a more modern slip yoke driveshaft, replacing the ball and trunnion. That's why the '65 transmission is valuable.

I would port the 516's, add hardened seats and run them. They have some nice looking chambers.

The 516 chambers are better than the ports,IIRC the 516s untouched will flow about as much as a 360 head.

A proper porting job would get them to the easy 450hp range. It would start with the bowl and valve guide area. Look for 516 porting articles online before you let anyone touch them.
