I'm tired of messing with this leaky stamped pan. Is there a cast pan out there that isn't +2 qts, etc? Or do I just need to suck it up, and go get the reusable gasket from the dealer, and hope for the best?

I can't remember what pan I have. I bought it about 5 years ago. Seems like it's a B&M, but can't remember. It's chrome, and has a drain bolt.

I didn't see anything on their website, but while googling I did find this.

They list a "lightweight" pan that doesn't say deep or extra quarts. Any thoughts?

Sure it is the pan? I had a bad dipstick tube that leaked around the "O" ring seal.
The CRT cast pan is pretty nice at $155, but is a deeper pan.

My Chrome 727 pan is a turd too. NO dents anywhere, its NOT bent, but even with the top notch MOPAR gasket, the dang thing still leaks.

did you take the "chrome" off the sealing surface of the pan? Chrome is hard to get a good seal on...

Not to hijack, but......
I tried taking a D/A to the pan rail, followed by RTV sealant, then the Mopar gasket.... The only reason that it is still on the trans is because it has a drain plug. Luckily its in my beater truck, not the Charger!

You could just use the Mopar ATF RTV and no gasket. That RTV seals really good.

I'd be willing to bet it's not the pan, I had same issue and replaced pan and gasket at least 5 times! After getting advice here found it was 4 different spots leaking and making it look like a pan problem.

Sounds crazy, but after all said and done, I had at least $300 into fixing my leaks!

This is where mine is leaking. Tried a new o-ring and it did not help. I think that it might be the the bore, but have not looked.

What did you find to fix your leak?

How about putting some RTC on the filler tube above the O ring' Ley it sit for an hour and then install it. Letting it sit before installing it has been the trick for me to get it to seal.

A deep pan gives so many extra benefits. I have a aluminum deep pan with a single tube Moroso cooler. Nothing goes through the radiator. Driving on the raod the oil never goes above 200 and when I raced at the drag strip it never goes above 200. They say that it should "ideally" run around 180. 200 dergress will make you need to change trans fluid every 50,000 instesd of 60,000. Of course if you tow, you will need a bigger trans cooler. Next week sermon "Deep oil pan VS speed bumps".

I put the rtv below the o ring , install the tube and let it sit over night .

The 2 guys above chasing leaks , I'll wager it's not the pan gasket , GRAVITY is funny that way ...

I chased a leak for 2 years , turns out it was the fittings for the cooler lines and the cooler lines themselves ...

I put the Mopar ATF RTV around and under the "O" ring of the dipstick tube. That stuff really works. It is the black RTV the factory used to seal the oil pans on the new cars that don't use a pan gasket.

I hada similar issue( and yes it was my pan )

I ordered a brand new steel pan for B series dodge van with a 36RH trans. ( mid 80's models )
99.9% of the people will never catch it that it wasn't the original 1970 pan. It came in a black E-coat finish and I put it on with nothing but the gasket, never leaked again. Never even scuffed the e-coat up or used any kind of sealer.

For the dipstick I suggest buying a replacement from Mancini... Just a better design...

I have a Direct Connection deep chrome pan (I think they were all made in the same Chinese factory) -- used to leak like they all do. Ground the chrome off the mating surface and bought the reusable gasket -- hasn't lost a drop since.

I'm pretty sure my problem is the pan. Everytime I've removed the pan there's one corner where the gasket is really narrow, and it doesn't even look compressed. I will mess with the pan a little more and try the Mopar gasket. Yes, I've sanded the chrome off on the mating surface.

I'm also afraid that I have a small front seal leak. I've noticed a very small amount of fluid at the front of the bell housing. I'm now thinking about also pulling the trans, replacing the front seal, and considering replacing the torque converter while I have it apart. I built the new engine last summer (just a slightly warmer 318 with Whiplash cam), but didn't even think about the torque converter. Probably fine with the stocker, but just toying with this idea right now. I recently picked up a sand rail project and bus engine/trans. Been trying to stay focused on the Belvedere, but it's hard.

BTW, I would really like to add a cast pan with greater capacity, but my car sits pretty low, and the roads around here aren't that great. Not worth the risk.

This topic is going OUT THERE ...and there is no-need for that.

As long as the pan-rail is straight ....and you do not OVERtorque the bolts ... you should not have a prob.

GRINDING the chrome off ... .... uNless the chrome is peeling ...it should not be an issue. And even then .... just use some Hi-Tac gasket spray and some RTV ...and all should be well.....

And lastly ... running the bolts down on the pan ....is done in INCH pounds ...NOT foot-pounds.
