Usually when I purchase tools that I'm only going to use once every blue moon I buy harbor freight. The above will work for you if you dont mindcheap tools.

You can borrow from stores like Autozone, I believe they have a program to lend tools

It may be junk but it works. The stuff places like Autozone rent out is the same crap that places like Harbor Freight sells. In my opinion most tools now a days are junk, they are just not made like they used to be. If they are good tools the average guy cant afford a set without taking out a second mortgage .

Why does anyone need a special tool t o replace a u joint when all that is needed is a screw driver to pop out the circlips and hammer to drive the joint out of the yoke and a vise to reinstall and lack of a vise to reinstall the hammer will suffice to reinstall the joints and caps too. In this case I wouldn't even call a special tool a convenience but a needless way to line someone else's pocket.

Between working at my friends vette shop on the side and helping out some friends i tired of whacking the caps in. Must of the time they go right in then others have to be a pain in the .......... You needle bearing fall over then you pick at them with a pick to stand them up i had enough.

If you seen that amount of u-joints that i have to be changed on half shafts on the vettes. just looking for something to make my life easier i used it a a tranny shop a few years ago worked like butter.

If you notice I didn't recommend wacking them in with a hammer - Said it could be done and have done it. But there is sure nothing wrong with putting them in a vice to push them together and just as quick as any special tool and something that any shop worth going into has.
I am relatively new at this game too. Only been doing it since the early to mid 60's.

I was replaying to why i "needed" a special tool as you said in you early post. You felt the need to explain to me how to install without a tool and i was just stating why i want it.

i have receive some good advice from you before and have respect for you but the previous post seemed like a little bit of a cheap shoot at me. I am not trying to a moparts verbel brawl but kind of responds that have little to do with the question ask justed seems to me as not need and i take a little offense too.

Once again not to start something but that is how i fell about it sorry for this rant.

It does relate to the topic. I stated that there is no special tool needed and why. If you feel that you need one to be efficient go for it.

Dang that makes me a newby. BTW I've installed countless PTO U joints for over 24 years now and have never used any kind of special tool.

Yes a question asking for recommending a tool .

And they a statement that says i don't know why people need a tool really is on topic.

Hey I just remembered that I own a U joint tool made by OTC that I used on drive shaft U joints in 1970s International trucks. Those U joints bolted in and you had to use this tool to pull them out. I'll post a picture of it when I get down to work, but it won't work for cars or todays newer trucks. Been so long since I used it I forgot I owned it. It was a must to work on those old corn binders.(International trucks) U know those old Loadstars with the half hoods. Man those were a bear to work on. 392 and 345 MV404 gas motors. I've rebuilt a couple of those motors back in the early 80s.

Oh there are joints that special tools are needed for. Like CV joints a lot of big truck stuff but not the common cross type used by Mopar that we referred to here. But again if you think that you need on - go for it.

I agree with Knows.Ive installed thousand with hammer and vice.Been doing it since the 60s also.I change them in my 65 with the shaft in the car.The rear is the only one that gets changed as the fromt is B&T.Takes me longer to get the jack and stands out than it does to change it.Rocky

I dunno. I was skeptical, but used the vise and socket advice from the Factory Service manual, and it worked as specified.

Knows I even have a BJ press.I do quite a few ball joints at work.I tried it once for U joints and it was more trouble than it was worth.Ill just use it for ball joints or when we do semi joints.Rocky
