Getting my drivetrain plans down and I was thinking about the gear vendor units. I know they enable you to run race gears with a 727 but I just wanted to know if anyone swears by them or can tell me if they are worth the coin. I have seen some used ford models for a decent price in my area but they are used and I think they are car manufacturrer specific. If I can get one having 6 gears with my stroker and 4.10 or better gears sounds like I may never want to be without my car! Thanks in advance for the feedback guys!

A member board name TheMeanMachine installed one in his car. He was happy with it when he got it in there. He had to modify the floorpan under the rear seat by building a small box for clearance. I saw the car at one of The Moaprs at the battleship show in Mobile AL and you did not see the box at all frominside the car. He ahs since moved (with the car) overseas. He does post still so maybe he will see this post and elaborate more.

If you pick up a unit that was on a GM or Ford you can buy just the adapter for Mopar separately... The earlier electronics had issues & yeah you'll need to clearance the tunnel but overall they are pretty good units... The one I installed was in a motorhome so totally different deal...

There are some ford units for sale in my area for around a grand, I can use one of those? That would make this far more affordable. If I can use a non Mopar one with an adapter then I will get a unit for sure!!!

One of the best items you can add to the car . I put one in my Dart
3.55 gears down to 2.76 .I run 70-75 on the highway at around 2600 rpm . Slight cutout to tunnel under seat , install a new driveshaft.
Around 5000 trouble free miles LOVE IT.

I just went looking & couldn't find a list for the adapter/replacement housing but I know a few guys that have gotten them in the past... I would suggest calling or emailing Gear Vendors before parting with any cash on a used unit... Also as I mentioned earlier the early electronics had issues so keep that in mind when negotiating..

Best upgrade I ever did to the car. Put mine in 7 years ago. Have over 50,000 miles and 100 1/4 mile runs on it now. Had to replace one speedo sensor for 42 bucks this year. Other than that it has been trouble free. Had to air hammer the tunnel for a bolt to clear on the passenger side of an ebody to complete the install.

I put one n my 69 bee two years ago. Love it. The only body mod needed was putting a couple 3/16 inch dimples in the drive tunnel for two bolts to clear. You should be able to buy the MOPAR tail shaft adapter from GV. Ask for the shorty adapter. Their tech guys are easy to work with.

Don't be mislead by the 6 gears selling feature. It is very hard to time it properly to go from 1L to 1H to 2L to 2H, ect..... the GV is an electronic solenoid with a delay from the time you push the button until it shifts. You need to time this to take place just before shifting from 1 - 2. The best part of the OD is the 22% reduced RPM when cruising.

The shorty adapter? The normal Mopar trannies take the 18.5 adapter, the shorty is normally for truck trannies..

I would call gearvendors about the correct adapter before you buy the used unit.
I have heard that GV wants something like $600 or $700 bucks for the mopar adapter with your old ford/chevy one as a trade in.

Can anyone confirm this ?

EDIT: Straight from the GearVendors website, in responce to customer asking about swapping his unit from one model trans to another.

"In most cases it is in the 700 dollar neighborhood to switch these components to the new application you need"

Can't be used with a ball/trunion 727 with a rear pump. Otherwise i'd have one in the wagon. But i like my pushbuttons!

I put about 30.000mi on my GV without any problems at all. Sold the MeanMachine last month in favour for a 64 Belvedere with 440 / 727 PB trans and 4.10 gears. Unfortunately no GV for this car due to the rear pump, otherwise I would go this route again.
Here is the write up of the installation in the 73 Sat.

As far as I know, GV changed the case sightly since then, which should give you more clearance in the tunnel area.

I installed one 4 years ago in my Charger myself. It was easy and I hate working on transmissions. Couple of dimples with an air hammer for the driveshaft hump and it was installed in about 12 hours. Helps if you have a friend with a post-lift or have one yourself. Luckily I managed. my 3.55s with a 28" tire took me down to 2600rpm doing 80mph. I drove it across country from California to Atlanta in three days and I didn't have one problem...Still don't.

Looking back...even though I love it...I wish I went with a manual gearbox if I was gonna spend the coin. I bought mine about 2200 through a deal on this site when it came around. Would have preferred the 5 speed but I can't go changing it now.

As already mentioned, split-shifting the gears is a PITA. I could never sync it correctly. Syncing from L to H in one gear is fine....changing from H of one gear to L of the next is the problem. I typically just toss it into Auto on the switch and leave it be. Some people put a dash switch to turn it on and off, I just installed the footswitch that came with the unit.

Opps my bad. I forgot that you also need the short truck out put shaft for the shorty tail adapter to work.
